Soldiers prepare the unexploded air drop World War Two 250 kg for carriage
Bomb Disposal Experts Destroy WW2 Bomb Found in Bermondsey, London - 24 Mar 2015
Army Bomb disposal experts have defused an unexploded air drop World War Two 250 kg German Bomb near the Shard in Bermondsey this evening. The device was then taken by road to an undisclosed location to be destroyed.
The bomb would have been dropped over London by the Luftwaffe in the 1940s but unusually did not detonate. It had lain undisturbed deep in the ground for 70 years but was uncovered yesterday during construction works.
Bomb disposal teams from Shorncliffe Troop 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Royal Logistic Corps and Sappers from 36 Engineer Regiment Explosive Ordnance Disposal were involved in excavating the device so that it can be safely defused. The operation to excavate the device took all night as it was in an awkward position. The fuse, situated underneath the bomb had to be accessed by trenches which were dug carefully beneath the bomb.
