Albino squirrel fattens up for winter, Croydon, south London, Britain - 20 Nov 2010
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Rex Features ( 1251226f )
Albino Squirrel Fattens Up For Winter
This albino squirrel seems to have eaten all the nuts as he busily fattens himself up for Christmas.
Squirrels don't hibernate but as the weather gets colder they put on up to 25% of their bodyweight in fat reserves to help them get through the winter.
And with his distinctive all white appearance this albino squirrel, spotted in a park in Croydon, has an even harder life then his red and grey coloured counterparts.
Albino squirrels often have a much shorter lifespan because their colouring makes them easy targets for predators
So not only does this busy squirrel have to consume as much food as possible, he also has to avoid becoming anything else's lunch.
This particular pale animal is helped in his task by willing humans, to whom he has become so accustomed he will eat of their hands.
Albinism is a rare condition that is inherited and caused by a melanin deficiency which affects only 1 in 100,000 squirrels.
Despite the rarity the South Croydon/Purley/Wallington area of South London seems have been home to a population of Albino squirrels since the Victorian era.
Indeed the local museum even features an albino squirrel discovered in the area during the 1890s.
Meanwhile, another stuffed squirrel can also be found eating his fill of nuts in a park not too far away.

LEGGY LADIES HAVE HIT WITH 'SYNCHRONISED OFFICE OLYMPICS'
A group of Moscow office workers have found a novel way to lighten up a dull day at work, and have become internet sensations in the process.
A clip of five Russian women taking performing a synchronised "swimming" routine at their desks has become a massive hit after attracting a million viewers in two weeks.
The leggy ladies filmed their routine for an Olympics-themed competition.
And the inventive idea certainly made a splash with judges as the women, who work for an architects' firm, scooped first prize of GBP 3,500.
The clip, which has become a favourite on YouTube, was filmed secretly during their lunch breaks.
According to worker Mosha Dugina, filming the video was a "breath of fresh air" and they enjoyed the "chance to show off a little and show people that we have beautiful long legs".

SHAMROCK FROM THE KING
Honouring the half-Centenary of the regiment's founding, the King presented shamrock to the 1st Battalion, the Irish Guards, during a ceremonial parade at the Chelsea barracks, London, today (St Patrick's Day). The King, Colonel-in-chief of the regiments, was accompanied by the Queen, Princess Elizabeth, and the Princess Royal. The Canadian governor general, Viscount Alexander who is also a Colonel of the Regiment, flew from Canada for the occasion. Annual presentation of the shamrock is a regimental tradition initiated by Queen Alexandra in 1902.
