A €1.36 million euros parasol has been unveiled — to celebrate the official start of Summer.
Italian luxury umbrella manufacturer Il Marchesato has joined forces with UK artist and bespoke luxury event organiser Debbie Wingham.
It has been described as the world’s most expensive parasol.
It is waterproof so also works as an umbrella.
British-bornWingham is the designer behind some of the world’s most extravagant creations, from diamond-encrusted gowns and shoes to oner-off objects d’art.
The parasol features 24-carat gold hardware as well as a a dual-layer fabric waterproof fabric covering offering full UV protection.
The canopy is lined with a baroque pattern, adorned with elaborate floral brooches embroidered with real diamonds and pearls.
Wingham joined with Il Marchesato for a commissioning client who was said to be particularly passionate about sun protection, valuing skincare and UV defence as much as shelter from the rain.
The client approached Wingham with a collection of heirloom diamonds gifted by grandparents to create “something extraordinary.”

A beach umbrella that uses the sun’s energy to keep a mini-fridge of food and drink cool, is hoping to make summer in the sun more comfortable. The parasol has foldable photovoltaic solar panels to generate electricity for refrigeration and cooling. The umbrella was commissioned by Italy’s leading ice-cream and frozen-desserts brand, Sammontana. It invited international design and innovation firm CRA-Carlo Ratti Associati and architect Italo Rota to develop a project that puts forward a more sustainable vision for the beach resorts of tomorrow. The folding photovoltaic array was designed in collaboration with US professor Chuck Hoberman who specialises in “transformable design”.It was inspired by aerospace technologies to generate power, which is then used for refrigeration and cooling. The first prototypes of the beach umbrella will be showcased in of Milan, Italy, from June 12th.
