Brilliant Bird Is Bathing In The Rain
    Who needs a bird bath?

Living up to its name, this small jewel coloured bird had a brilliant idea when it came to bathing.

Perched on a twig, the green-crowned brilliant hummingbird simply had to wait for a handy rain shower.

But rather than a nice relaxing soak, the bird's ablutions appeared to be a rather energetic affair.

As the water began to fall the brilliant began to flap its wings furiously in order to make the most of the downpour.

The feathered bather was spotted enjoying a spruce-up in the rainforest of Costa Rica by photographer Paul Hobson.

Kermit would do well to avoid this particular swamp.

One frog found it wasn't easy being green when a heron not only selected it for lunch, but subjected it to some controlled flipping - prior to swallowing it whole.

But not before giving the heron a raspberry by sticking its tongue out.

Photographer Nate Chappell captured the scene at Kitty Hollow County Park in Missouri City, Texas.

He explains: "Each evening for a spell a group of yellow-crowned night herons would fly in to feed on frogs and bugs in the swampy grass there.

"These images show a night heron which has caught a good sized frog.

"The heron had to flip the frog in the air several times in order to get it in right position to go down the hatch.

"Finally it was able to swallow the frog and you can clearly see the tongue of the frog sticking out as it awaits its fate.

"The night heron was preoccupied with eating his catch so it allowed me a close approach for some nice photographs."

Rare Bird Immortalised in Stained Glass
A rare bird that caused a flock of twitchers to descend on a quiet Norfolk village has been immortalised in stained glass.

The tiny North American white-crowned sparrow attracted bird lovers from far and wide when it appeared in Cley Next The Sea in January 2008.

The reason for the excitement was the fact it has only previously been sighted four times in Britain and Ireland.

During its ten-week stay in Cley thousands of eager people flocked to the village in an effort to catch a glimpse of the unusual visitor.

For the privilege each person donated to a charity collection, managing to raise some GBP 6,378.

This money has now been used to restore a large stained glass window at the 13th century church in the village.

And as a reminder of where that money came from the huge window features a lifesize image of the seven-inch long white-crowned sparrow that caused all the excitement.

Painted by Cley-based Richard Millington, the tiny image has taken up residence in the bottom left hand corner of the window.

When the sparrow first flew into Cley two years ago it alighted in the garden of retired vicar, the Rev Richard Bending and his wife Sue.

It is thought that it may have been blown 3,000 miles off course and landed in Norfolk while migrating south from the east coast of Canada to the U.S.

As it could only be seen from the Bending's house they moved their bird feeding table closer to the road to enable other bird lovers to be able to spot it.

Over the next ten weeks an estimate 4,000 twitchers took the opportunity, regularly gathering in large groups at the end of the driveway to wait for the bird's appearance.

World's Rarest Birds Captured On Camera
These remarkable pictures reveal some of the world's rarest birds - which have only ever been photographed by a handful of people.

The unique shots were captured by patient photographers who travelled to some of the remotest places on the planet and spent weeks behind the lens.

They are all winning entries in an international competition to secure images of the 566 most threatened birds on Earth.

They are to be featured in a new book, The World's Rarest Birds, which aims to highlight the plight of these endangered birds.

"These are all incredibly rare birds and capturing them on camera shows a huge commitment by each photographer," said Andy Swash, a member of the World's Rarest Project team.

"You can't just go out into your back garden and get these shots. These birds live in really remote locations.

"Once you have got there you often have to spend hours waiting to see these and getting any image, let alone the one you want, could take weeks or months."

One of the most spectacular images shows a Kakapo, a flightless parrot from New Zealand, taken by photographer Shane McInnes.

There are just 124 of these birds remaining in the wild, but amazingly this picture was snapped on a compact camera just a metre or so away from the parrot.

"Very few people have been fortunate to get that close to a Kakapo. But they are not used to predators and are not worried by humans so Shane has ended up was able to take this fantastic shot," added Andy.

Another image shows a Brazilian Merganser with its eight young ducklings, which can only be found on fast-flowing rivers in central Brazil and north-eastern Argentina.

The population is less than 250 and decreasing due to pollution and changes in water flow.

OUR LITTLE PONY - BRITAIN'S SMALLEST HORSE

Britain's smallest horse is so tiny she thinks she's the pet dog.

Lucy the four-year-old Shetland pony is just 19.5 inches tall and she is so small her owner Sandra Ponder, 63, can pick her up in her arms.

The tiny pony, who weighs around 100 pounds, likes nothing more than to roll over and have her tummy tickled or nestle into the arms of her owner.

Sandra, who runs a veterinary surgery near St Albans, Herts, owns 14 miniature ponies in total.

But Lucy is still dwarfed by the group. Her 'largest' pet pony measures around 34 inches.

Lucy is so small, measuring just five hands, Sandra calls her "a miniature of a miniature."

But the pint-sized pony doesn't let her small size get in her way - many are astonished to see the little pony happily at play with the larger horses in the stable.

Sandra said: "We have put her in the paddock with a larger horse called April.

"April is a two-year-old and measures 14 hands but Lucy doesn't seem to notice - she charges around the bigger horse at such speeds.

"She literally runs circles around her.

"Lucy can really move for a little one - none of the bigger horses can catch her.

"People are always shocked to see how lively and fast she is."

Lucy the Shetland pony with Big 'Ben' (aged 28 years), The UK's smallest horse, measuring just 19 and a half inches at the shoulder, has been revealed at a stables in Hertfordshire.

Field Marshall the Giant Charolais Bull, Burnham-on-Sea, Somerset, Britain - 04 Dec 2007

The farmer who brought us Britain's biggest bullock has found another record breaker - measuring 6ft 3in tall.
Arthur Duckett, 78, reckons massive Field Marshall, his six-year-old Charolet bull, weighing in at 1,360 kilos will be crowned the nations biggest. Arthur, a farmer, from Burnham-on-sea, Somerset, immediately saw the bull's potential, and said it will put on 300 kilos in the next year. He bought the white bullock two years ago and decided to keep it as a pet when he realised it was a one-off.
Two years ago Arthur and his wife Helen broke records with their 6ft 5in bull Colonel, who weighed 3,500lbs. The Colonel and Field Marshall are kept in a 22-acre field on Arthur's farm, and is in good company as he shares the plot with a 5ft 6in tall Highland steer called The Captain. 717981h
