Turkish-born Sipahioglu as the last of a dying breed, a dinosaur representing an era when agency heads were journalis ts first, businessmen second. After getting his start in 1952 as a sports re porter, Sipahioglu went on to found one newspaper and edit another. He repor ted from Havana during the Cuban missile crisis, brought back rare pictures from Albania and in 1973 founded Sipa with his partner and later wife, Ameri can journalist Phyllis Springer.
