A young cheetah went to war with a pair of warthogs - and ended up running off with its tail between its legs.

Photographer Charlotte Rhodes from York captured the hilarious scene as the predator turned tail in Kenya's Masai Mara earlier this month (June).

Her dramatic images show the sub-adult big cat approaching the hogs. There is a brief stand-off before the balance of power tips and the warthogs, who have four sharp tusks on their heads, sprint after the cheetah.

And cheetahs may be the fastest land animal on Earth, but when startled or threatened, warthogs can be surprisingly fast, running at speeds of up to 30 miles (48 kilometres) an hour.

Charlotte says: "I have seen cheetahs take on piglets but these were a little large for them. The cheetah mother wanted nothing to do with this confrontation.

"Initially the warthogs ran off but then realising the situation turned the tables on the callow cats."
