Ducks on a frozen pond, Baffins, Portsmouth, Hampshire, Britain

Dancing Ducks On Ice
These ducks ended up with their feathers well and truly ruffled when they tried to land on an icy pond.
The pair of Mallards seemed to be taking part in dancing on ice when they came into land on the frozen pond in Portsmouth.
After an elegant touch down, one was sent sprawling when its legs slipped out from beneath it.
It was then joined by a second duck who suffered a similar embarrassing fate.
In the end, after much slipping and sliding, the pair were forced to adopt a comical walk in order to traverse the ice safely.

European starlings try to steal nest from a pair of northern flickers, Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Florida, America - 27 Mar 2011

Nest Stealing Starlings Cause A Flap
These vicious European starlings caused a real flap when they bombard a pair of northern flickers in a bid to steal their nest.
The daring thieves launched themselves at the tree and battled for several minutes until they won the war - forcing the owners to flee.
One starling even pecked at the male flicker's head before grasping its beak with a claw.
Photographer Fabiola Forns, 62, had been told by a friend that a pair of northern flickers were being "harassed" by starlings as they tried to establish a nest.
So, as she and her photographer husband Alfred, 63, had the day off work, they drove to the Wakodahatchee Wetlands in Florida armed with their cameras.
Fabiola, a photography teacher, said: "The pair of flickers started arranging the nest early in the day and were harassed by a gang of starlings.
"There was a midday break and the flickers continued chipping wood inside the cavity.
"After we were there, we could see a handful of the starlings get close and apparently plotted the moment to hit again.
"Sure enough, the attack came against the male, sometimes being mobbed by more than one starling.
"The fight went on for a few long minutes, even inside the cavity.
"Finally, an out-of-breath flicker had to give in and leave the nest to the gang of starlings.
"I'm not sure if any bird was critically injured but feathers flew everywhere and they were pecking at each other with fury."
The European starling was introduced to the state in the late 1800s by a William Shakespeare fan, together with all the species figuring in his work.
Fabiola said there are now millions of the "pests" and a fair amount of them are destroyed because they are not covered by the Migratory Bird Act.
She added: "They are causing a problem...

Gorilla plays with Nintendo DS accidentally dropped into its enclosure, San Franciso Zoo, America - 06 Aug 2010

Bawang the gorilla plays with Nintendo DS games console accidentally dropped into her enclosure. Her adopted 20-month-old son Hasani comes to investigate.
EXCLUSIVE - Donkey Kong: Gorilla Plays With Video Game Dropped in Pen
Visitors to a zoo were amazed to see a gorilla playing with a handheld VIDEO GAME
Photographer Christina Spicuzza snapped female Bawang who had managed to get hold of a Nintendo DS a young boy had dropped into her enclosure.
But her new toy soon caught the attention of 20-month-old son Hansani - who came and peered at the game before making a fruitless grab for it.
Christina, 33, of California, told Rex Features: "I heard a commotion and realised a little boy had dropped the Nintendo into the gorilla habitat.
"Bawang immediately ran over to get the game before sitting down and inspecting it. But pretty soon Hasani came over to see what was going on.
"Bawang was looking at it intently, flipping it around a few times. She seemed to recognise that it was something to be viewed, and put it up to her face and eyes on a few occasions.
"Hasani reached for it a few times, and was swatted away by Bawang. Of course, the little guy thought he could do a better job and figure it out."
Bawang was eventually persuaded to thrown the Nintendo back into the watching crowd by a gamekeeper - in return for an apple.
"I heard a commotion to my right, and a trainer was telling everyone to step back. It seemed as soon as Bawang saw the trainer, she put the Nintendo in her mouth and began walking toward the crowd.
"The trainer was still attempting to move people out of the way, when Bawang threw the device up the approx 20 foot wall into the crowd, and it hit the ground. The trainer threw an apple that Bawang caught and ran off quickly.
"The boy got his Nintendo back, and was very happ...

Cape Province, South Africa
A WORLD OF DIVERSITY AND DIFFERENCE IN SOUTH AFRICA
From vast plains to rolling mountains and golden beaches to barren deserts, South Africa is a vast country of huge diversity.
And its bustling cities are just as varied as its landscapes - from the likes of hustling Johannesburg to the cosmopolitan Cape Town.
The country is renowned for its wines and is the world's largest producer of gold.
In 2010, it will also play host to the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the first time the contest has been held on the African continent.
Cape Town is the second largest city in South Africa and is the capital of the Western Cape Province.
It is also the legislative capital of the country, being the location of parliament and other government buildings.
One of these is the old city hall, a large Edwardian building in the city centre that was built in 1905.
It was here, on 11 February, 1990, that Nelson Mandela made his first public speech just hours after being release from prison.
Cape Town is noted for its architectural heritage, with the highest density of Cape Dutch style buildings in the world.
One of its latest constructions is slightly different however - the main stadium that will host matches during the World Cup.
Known as the 'Mother City', the Cape Town metropolitan area covers a vast sprawl; however, the city centre or 'bowl' is relatively small.
It is nestled between Table Bay and the Table Mountain range, which provides a dramatic backdrop to the city.
The flat-topped Table Mountain, along with other famous peaks such as Lion's Head and Apostles Mountain, form part of the Table Mountain National Park.
This area is a significant tourist attraction, with many visitors using the cableway or hiking to the top of Table Mountain.
Its main feature is what gi...

CHEEKY MEERKAT GIVES GIRAFFE A KISS
This cheeky meerkat came face-to-face with a giant giraffe after wandering into its enclosure.
The tiny mammal bounded into the giraffe's pen, reaching out a paw when the larger beast took an interest in the unusual visitor.
At one point the mischievous meerkat even appeared to give the giraffe a kiss on the cheek.
But eventually the meerkat pushed its luck and was forced to flee when the giraffe started kicking its hooves.
The remarkable confrontation was captured by 40-year old-photographer Alfonso Paz at Lisbon Zoo, Portugal.
He said: "Two meerkats escaped from their enclosure and were playing with each other along the road that led to the giraffes.
"They were hiding here and there as they ran into the giraffes' compound.
"They found some large rocks and as soon as the first meerkat appeared standing up between the rocks, a young giraffe approach them.
"I was fascinated as the giraffe and the meerkat just stared at each other for a few moments - I had never seen anything like it.
"I didn't even prepare the camera at first because I didn't want to disturb what was happening.
"But then the giraffe leaned over the meerkat and touched its head. Then they started playing with each other.
"At one point the meerkat seemed to give the giraffe a little kiss on the cheek."
Alfonso said that something then seemed to irritate the giraffe and it started kicking out at the meerkat.
He added: "All hell broke loose.
"The giraffe seemed to be offended and started kicking in every direction and the other giraffes started running in every direction and jumping and kicking.
"The meerkats seemed to enjoy the scene because they stayed for a while l...

STORY LINK: http://www.rexfeatures.com/nanolink/575x
A British photographer has cheated death after a drag car slid out of control and headed straight at him.
The high-powered machine, capable of 0-60 in under a second, careered off a wall THREE feet in front of Andy Willsheer, but, amazingly, he kept snapping away.
The resulting images show the 3,000hp dragster - or top alcohol funny car - on a terrifying collision course with 62-year-old Andy - with one hair-raising frame featuring a spinning wheel seemingly about to smash his lens.
And pictures taken from the opposite side of the track show just how close the dragster came to crushing plucky Andy.

SICK PET TATTOO CRAZE SWEEPS RUSSIA
Animal rights campaigners have slammed a cruel new craze in Russia that has sprung up for so-called animal 'lovers'.
Rather than the traditional cat / dog grooming services, some Russians are now choosing to personalise their pets with tattoos.
Just one of the pets to undergo this kind of controversial 'body enhancement' is Mickey, a rare Canadian Hairless breed also known as a Sphynx cat.
After being knocked out, a Tutankhamun design was inked on to Mickey's chest as part of a three hour procedure.
Afterwards, his female owner declared herself delighted with the 'cattoo', saying she had wanted "something new and different for these new exiting times we live in ".
The practice has been slammed as barbaric and the fear is now that the trend will catch on amongst wealthy pet owners in the West.
"The ethical thinking about animals in Russia lags behind the West. People here mostly buy animals for selfish reasons. Everything else that happens to them afterwards is a consequence of that," comments activist Irina Novozhilova.
