Coalescence at the Old Royal Naval College Painted Hall, Greenwich, London, UK
Press photocall for Coalescence, an art installation by Paul Cocksedge at the Old Royal Naval College Painted Hall, Greenwich, London, UK.
8th December 2023
Runs until 4th February 2024.
Weighing half a tonne, Coalescence is made from more than 2,500 pieces of coal – the amount of coal consumed by a single 200W lightbulb in just one year. The six-metre Coalescence is suspended in the ornate Painted Hall, and illuminated to create a dazzling, crystal-like display that draws on the lustrous quality of anthracite, a high-carbon coal.

The Cofiwch Dryweryn mural
Cofiwch Dryweryn is a graffitied stone wall near Llanrhystud, Ceredigion. Author and journalist Meic Stephens originally painted the words onto the wall of a ruined farm cottage in the early 1960s following the decision by the Liverpool City Council to flood the Tryweryn Valley, including the community of Capel Celyn, to create the Llyn Celyn reservoir. It has been vandalised on numerous occasions but every time it has been rebuilt or repainted immediately. The phrase "Cofiwch Dryweryn" has itself become a prominent political slogan for Welsh nationalism, appearing on T-shirts and banners, as well as replica murals all over Wales. Capturing Britain's week of mourning for the Queen - a photo essay.
Memories and reflections from the GuardianÕs team of photographers on recording a historic week.
The public have turned out in their thousands to pay their respects to the Queen, some perhaps motivated by wanting to be part of the historic moment, and many by a personal sense of loss and grief.
Here, Guardian photographers discuss how they have found shooting the ceremonial and informal aspects of mourning for the Queen over the last week.
