    THIS ISN'T A ' PIPE DREAM ' -

The girls really are handing out pipes and tobacco (specially blended for discerning customers) in a New York store. They are Wilke sisters, Anna and Louisa, now efficiently run the New York tobacco business founded by their grandfather in 1872. Since her own father had no sons, he told his daughter's the secrets of pipe making and tobacco blending. Fruits of their studies are shown in their morning mail - practically every day orders arrived for the special pipes, some with specifications and blueprints detailing manufacture. The sisters, ably assisted by a master craftsman, fulfil every order. in the shop they have racks of pipes ranging in price from £1-£100.
Besides this, the girls have developed their own tobacco blends, and they have a card index listing the personal preferences of 15,000 customers , including F.B.I.chief Herbert Hoover.

MADAME PETTELAT FED POOR PARISIANS UNDER GERMAN OCCUPATION

Starting with a few pots and pans and a small supply of foodstuffs, Madame Blanche Pettelat opened a communal feed centre in Paris when the Germans occupied the capital and deprived the people of their minimum food requirements. Meals were provided for two francs, and given to the needy for nothing. Her good work grew in scope as the years passed, and when the Allies came to Paris with plentiful supplies of victuals, a chain of communal centres was serving more than 2,000,000 meals a year - and still expanding. Now that the relief authorities have taken over the feeding of Parisians, Madame Pettelat's organisation carries on with abundant food stocks, and an almost daily brightening of the menu, which listed only soup and a vegetable in the black days of Nazi rule.

Photo Shows: Madame Blanche Pettelat (right) and helpers serve a meal in one of the communal centres.
