REPORTAGE - Italien: Mantua Kulturhauptstadt 2016
July 8, 2016 - Mantua, Italy: Vortex by Hidetoshi Nagasawa at a contemporary temporary art exhibition. The city of Mantua proclaimed Italian culture capital in 2016, as chosen by the Italian Government on Tuesday 27 October 2015. Mantua will also be European Capital of Gastronomy, included in the Eastern Lombardy District (together with the cities of Bergamo, Brescia and Cremona). The Lombard city was the erstwhile princely seat of the House of Gonzaga family from the 14th to the 18th centuries, and its historic center was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007. Mantua, which already competed for European culture capital 2019, won with a project to remake itself into a smart city with digital tourism to set off its jewels. Among these is the landmark Palazzo Te, a mannerist pleasure palace built in 1524-34 for Federico II Gonzaga, masterpiece of architect Giulio Romano, a pupil of Raphael, who over 10 years directed a team of plasterers, carvers and fresco painters to decorate almost every single surface of the palace many loggias and salons. Mantua is also home to the Palazzo Ducale (Ducal Palace), where the Gonzagas lived from 1328 to 1707. The palace has some 500 rooms and is most famous for Andrea Mantegna's frescoes in the Camera degli Sposi (Bridal Chamber). Another remarkable museum recently restored is the Palazzo Arco, home of family Arco during two centuries. (Piero Oliosi/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) *** Local Caption *** 05545324

PORTRAIT OF 'REAL' MR DARCY TO BE SOLD
A watercolour of the 'real life' Mr Darcy - the man believed to have inspired Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice character - is expected to be sold for £50,000.
The miniature portrait of Thomas Lefroy is due to be sold at the Grosvenor House Art and Antiques Fair in London later this month.
Austen met Irish-born Lefroy in 1796 when she was 21; the couple are said to have talked, danced and flirted and Austen later described Lefroy as having a "boyish love" for her.
However in line with his family's expectation that he would find a wealthy wife, Lefroy went on to marry a wealthy heiress.
His and Jane's relationship was the subject of the 2007 film 'Becoming Jane', starring Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy.
The 3in miniature portrait of Lefroy that has come up for sale was painted on ivory in 1798 by English artist George Engleheart.
Several locks of hair are located in a panel at the back of the miniature, although it is not known to whom they belonged.
Elsewhere at the annual antiques fair are the offerings of 85 specialist dealers, including contemporary furniture designer and the late Princess Margaret's son David Linley.
This year the show will be opened by Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, a cousin of the Queen, while the Duke of Bedford is providing three Canalettos from Woburn Abbey, his stately home, for the annual loan exhibition.
Other items on display will include: a rare early copy of a lavishly illustrated Martin Luther translation of the New Testament, published in 1524; a selection of Vortex Credenza f...
