A robot marine research vessel has launched on a mission to gather environmental data about the oceans.Called Mayflower, it began its epic voyage on the 400th anniversary of the original Mayflower dialing ship which took the first settlers from Europe to North America.The Mayflower Autonomous Ship , a trimaran, set off from Plymouth in Devon today (sept 16) on six months of sea trials ahead of an Atlantic crossing attempt next year.The voyage based on the route taken by pilgrims aboard the Mayflower n 1620.The new vessel has artificial intelligence navigation system developed by tech company MarineAI and based on technologies from computing giant IBM. It makes use of data from onboard radar, GPS, AIS, nautical charts, attitude sensors, depth, a vehicle management system and weather data.It is able to scan the horizon for possible hazards, make informed decisions and change its course based on a fusion of live data.
