New scan for detecting breast cancer that takes less than a minute

A new breast scan for detecting cancer that takes less than a minute has been developed by scientists.
They say the system does not require painful compression like mammography.
Instead, patients stand and gently press their breast against an imaging window.
In tests involving four healthy individuals and 61 breast cancer patients, it produced clear, artificial intelligence-powered 3D images of common breast cancer subtypes.
Breast cancer is among the leading causes of death for women worldwide.
Early detection – most commonly through mammograms and ultrasound – has helped save countless lives.
But each technique has limitations. Mammography is widely available and relatively inexpensive, but it’s less accurate among women with dense breast tissue, involves radiation and is painful.
Ultrasound is better with dense breast tissue, but it can produce false positives and its quality is reliant upon the skill of the person operating the machine
Other tools such as MRI are effective but expensive, time-consuming and not widely available.
The new US-designed system is called OneTouch-PAT and combines advanced imaging, automation and artificial intelligence.
One of the team, professor Jun Xia from the University at Buffalo biomedical engineering department stressed more work is needed before it can be used in clinical settings.
