A pink toy flip phone for Barbie dolls is to be turned into a real-life working handset.
Europe’s largest smartphone manufacturer Human Mobile Devices has joined forces with Barbie maker Mattel to create the Barbie Flip Phone.
It is due to go on sale this Summer.
The company says the device will embody the vintage chic of the original girl empowerment brand with a dash of pink and “ sparkle.”
It comes after research show flip phones are making a comeback at the expense of more high tech phones as almost four in ten of 16-24 year-olds worry they spend too much time on their smartphone.
In the US alone, a third of the Gen Z age group is actively trying to limit time on social media.
An HMD spokesperson said: “It’s not just a generational shift, it’s a cultural movement.
“The great switch-off trend, initiated in 2021, is gaining momentum as people of all ages seek balance in an increasingly digital world. “
HMD said flip phone sales alone more than doubled in Europe in 2023 compared to the year before and expects further growth in 2024.
