The world's fastest military planes - the Spitfire I, an all-metal low-wing monoplane and the Vickers Wellesley, a long-range bomber and general purpose aircraft - were demonstrated at the Eastleigh Aerodrome in Southampton. Built for the Royal Air Force by the Supermarine Aviation Works (Vickers) Limited, both machines are equipped with retractable undercarriages. Spitfire I, a day and night fighter, is equipped with wing flaps. Both machines are to be on view for the first time at the R.A.F. Pageant at Hendon on 27th June. Photo shows the Spitfire I in flight during the demonstration on 18th June 1936. - ©2005 TopFoto

Icebergs from the Jacobshavn glacier or Sermeq Kujalleq drains 7% of the Greenland ice sheet and is the largest glacier outside of Antarctica. It calves enough ice in one day to supply New York with water for one year. It is one of the fastest moving glaciers in the world at up to 40 metres per day (19 metres per day before 2002) and has also receeded rapidly (40 km since 1850) due to human induced climate change as temperatures have risen in Greenland by 9 degrees fahrenheit in the last 60 years. An underwater moraine at the mouth of the fjord grounds the largest icebergs causing a backlog of ice completely blocking the entire length of the fjord with ice.

Classy, elegant, refined, the Rolls Royce is the mark of sophistication and panache.

But when the vehicle in question is the world's fastest Rolls blasting by at 185mph it is a job just to admire the car.

Car enthusiast Tod Weston wanted something that would "stand head and shoulders above the normal, everyday cars on the US highways".

So he decided to transform his 1970 Silver Shadow into a supercharged beast boasting a 1350bhp engine - which impressively pokes through the bonnet in hotrod style.

And to further ruffle the feathers of car purists the Florida real estate attorney has boosted the performance of the British classic by fitting a dual-bottle nitrous oxide system into the trunk - the combustion booster as used by fast and furious street racers.

Creator Perry Watkins tests his motorised table 'Fast Food' prior to his record attempt for world's fastest furniture. Perry's head is visible under the roast turkey, the Stig-like 'driver' is a dummy.
Fast Food... Motorised Table Breaks Fastest Furniture World Record
A wacky car fan has proved he has the fastest food by breaking a world speed record - with a motorised table.

Perry Watkins had the previous record for fastest furniture for lunch by topping out his table at 113mph. It beat a motorised sofa which managed 92mph.

The hobby mechanic whipped up a storm at Northamptonshire's Santa Pod Raceway on Sunday (5 Sep).

He was required to take two runs in an officially-timed flying quarter mile to dish up his time.

And Buckinghamshire-based Perry made sure his speedy spread - which he named Fast Food - came with all the trimmings.

It featured a delicious-looking dinner for six - complete with succulent roast chicken as table centrepiece, under which the driver's head pokes out.

Other ingenious flourishes saw exhaust fumes exiting two silver teapots, rolled-up napkin brake lights and, most impressively, flame-spewing teapots.

There were also six wrought-iron chairs, lace-effect plastic tablecloth, and, being a road-legal vehicle, the tax disc was neatly displayed on a champagne ice bucket.

He also included a Stig-like 'diner' kitted out in driving overalls and white helmet - although any resemblance to a mysterious perhaps-soon-to-be ex-BBC driver are coincidental.

The design was based on a classic Reliant Scimitar sports car chassis, fitted with a fuel-injected 4 litre Land Rover Discovery engine.

It also received a full-calorie kick thanks to a NITROUS OXIDE injection - the fuel used by Fast and Furious street racers - which boosts power from 150hp 180hp.

Perry, a sales director at high street shoe repairer Timpson, said: "I had to drive the table at speed over two runs for the official timers.

"I had reached 103mph in earlier test runs so was overjoyed that my table managed an ...

A plumber has built the fastest mobility scooter in the world - which whizzes along at an incredible 69mph.

Colin Furze, 31, spent nearly three months converting the machine which has a powerful 125cc motorbike engine hidden under the seat, five gears and twin exhausts.

The petrol-powered super scooter, which is British racing green, can almost reach the national speed limit and keep up with cars on the motorway.

It does 10 miles to the gallon and is nearly nine times faster than an average mobility scooter which glides along at just 8mph.

"It is quite scary when I'm driving it fast as the frame is pretty flimsy and designed for going along at slow speeds," said Colin, from Stamford, Lincs.

"You can't take your eyes off the road when driving it as any rash steering decisions could make it flip over and the slightest dip or bump in the road makes it drift off course."

Colin decided to transform the scooter after he was given the machine by a friend.

He was determined to build the fastest mobility scooter in the world and applied to Guinness to set the record as there wasn't one already in place.

He was told his scooter would have to travel at least 61.4mph and still look like a commercial mobility scooter.

"You hear lots of people complain about scooters going really slowly around supermarkets and blocking the aisles so I thought it would be a laugh to make a really fast one," he said.

"I was told I could modify the engine but I wasn't allowed to change the appearance in any way so I couldn't give it bigger wheels or make it more stable.

"I initially tried experimenting with battery power but I only got to about 30mph and the batteries died really quickly so I knew then it would have to be petrol powered."

He removed a 125cc engine from his motorcross...

Mobility Shooter Sets New World Record
A plumber has set the record for the fastest mobility scooter in the world - with an incredible speed of 71.59 mph.

Amazingly Colin Furze, 32, exceeded the national speed limit of 70mph when he raced the petrol-powered super scooter at the world famous Santa Pod raceway in Northants.

He spent nearly three months and GBP 400 converting the machine which has a powerful 125cc motorbike engine hidden under the seat, five gears and twin exhausts.

The British racing green mobile does 10 miles to the gallon and is nearly nine times faster than an average mobility scooter which glides along at just 8mph.

"It's great to have set the record and have the speed clocked officially and fantastic to have gone over 70 mph, I'm ecstatic," said Colin, who wore a helmet and full leathers for the record drive.

"I needed to go at 61.4 mph to do the record and I managed to do much better than that which is superb.

"The scooter was a bit twitchy when I was going at a high speed and it was quite uncontrollable but I managed not to crash.

Colin decided to transform the scooter after he was given the machine by a friend, who runs a mobility scooter repair shop.
