People walk near the Batllo house in Barcelona, Spain, on July 12, 2025. The Catalan capital experiences one of its hottest summers of the last decade, with temperatures exceeding 30 ?C. This phenomenon transforms the rhythm of the city: the beaches fill up from early morning, tourists seek shade in the narrow streets, and locals opt for ventilated terraces and evening hours to cope with the heat. The heat marks a vibrant but challenging season for those in Barcelona this summer. (Photo by Jorge Mantilla/NurPhoto)

FEATURE - Ein Schäferhund hat nach einem dringend benötigten Haarschnitt ein ganz neues Aussehen bekommen

A sheepdog has been given a whole new look after a much-needed haircut, leaving him virtually unrecognisable.

Old English Sheepdog, Arlo, came into Battersea Dogs & Cats Home when his owners were no longer able to look after him. Arlo’s fur was so long and matted it covered his eyes, meaning he’d regularly walk into walls and doors when he first arrived at the London rehoming centre.

As Arlo’s knots were so bad, Battersea staff had no choice but to clip all of Arlo’s hair off to make him more comfortable. It took three people two hours to clip the two-year-old from head to toe, removing 1.8 kilograms of hair while he was under sedation.

Rebecca Lodder, Rehoming and Welfare Manager at Battersea says: “We wouldn’t normally clip a dog with such long hair but as Arlo was in such discomfort, we felt that this was best for his welfare. Dogs with long hair require a lot of grooming and attention. This not only helps to keep them looking smart, but grooming is also vital for their physical health and wellbeing, too.

Arlo’s mats were so severe that they’d pull at Arlo’s skin, leaving him uncomfortable and anxious when he was being handled. He’s now having lots of positive training to help show him that grooming and handling can be an enjoyable experience.

“Arlo seems to have grown in confidence since having a haircut, too. He can see properly and is so much more comfortable with handling. He’s had a real ‘glow-up’ and now loves nothing more than running around and playing with his friends.”

Grooming is vital for all dogs, but especially for those with long hair. If a dog’s fur gets too matted or long, it can cause great discomfort and lead to infections in their eyes or ears. Keeping their coat knot-free will also help to keep your dog cooler in hot weather.

Rebecca continues “Arlo’s coat will eventually grow back, so he is looking for new owners who will help to keep him looking like the suave, well-groomed boy that he has become

King's Lynn fish docks in Norfolk transformed for the set of the new film
'The Personal History of David Copperfield' on set filming, King's Lynn, Norfolk, UK - 19 Jul 2018
Comedian Paul Whitehouse was spotted on the set of a new David Copperfield costume drama, as the docks at King's Lynn in Norfolk were transformed into a Victorian fish market today (Thurs). The actor was seen dressed in a brown hat and top and white dungarees as he filmed scenes for The Personal History of David Copperfield. He was spotted alongside a number of horse and carriages on the dock, which was covered with baskets of fresh fish, which soon started to smell in the heat. It is believed to be the first time the 60-year-old has been spotted on the set, but it is not yet known which character he is playing. The drama, which is directed by Armando Lannucci, also stars Dev Patel, Hugh Laurie and Peter Capaldi. It has been described as "a fresh and distinctive take on Charles Dickens' semi-autobiographical masterpiece." It is set in the 1840's and chronicles the life of David Copperfield, played by Slumdog Millionaire star Dev Patel.

A photographer has produced a series of beautiful photos of Rome, with an infrared twist...

Photographer Milán Rácmolnár went on a typical tourist route around the city, visiting Trastevere, the Colosseum, the Trevi fountain and Rome's Spanish steps.

In order to produce a different take on the typical tourist route, Milan experimented using infrared photography. In the pictures, a beautiful, light-pink haze can be seen.

Milan said: "I wanted to confront this peculiar look with a subjective tourist's view."

Waste not want not. Whet your appetite with this fly-tipping transformed into food.

Lor-K is a French artist who turns mattresses left on Parisian streets into artworks of pizza, sushi, waffles and more. After slicing and spray-painting the discarded items, the sculptor reassembles them to jazz up the grey pavements.

Just as the original owners leave behind their objects, so too does Lor-K desert her art: "I abandon every sculpture I make, I only keep the memories."
