The number has risen again on December 16th to the highest ever since the pandemic started. The Omicron COVID variant multiplies 70 times faster than Delta in human airways, according to researchers. The NHS is under severe pressure with a big backlog of patients as well waiting for routine operations. Cases of the virus have doubled in the last week.
