For Maui wildfire survivors who moved to Las Vegas, another climate disaster awaits: extreme heat.
A year after the Maui fire some try to rebuild life in the city known as the 'ninth Hawaiian island'

Remedios Ramos moved into her newly built, sand-colored Las Vegas home during a blistering week in July, when temperatures topped 117F.

One year ago, the 83-year-old lost everything she owned, narrowly escaping fireballs and falling trees in the Maui wildfires that burned her home in the historical town of Lahaina. The blaze was the deadliest US wildfire in a century.

Left: Remedios Ramos in her new Las Vegas home. After being displaced from Lahaina nearly a year ago she is adjusting to the new living situation and an extreme heat wave. Right: Ramos shows a photograph of herself and friends back in Lahaina where she was displaced by the fires nearly a year ago.
