A bird fancier is paying tribute to her beloved skateboarding cockatoo - who turned
100 before flying over to the afterlife - by compiling a book of photos of her feathered
    friend.
Spending hours in an aviary as a child, which was lovingly built for her by her
stepfather, the writer, conservationist and photographer formerly known as Trieste
changed her name to Sparrow Townsend in 2012, when she was 37, in honour of her
    appreciation of all things avian.
So began a love affair between Sparrow, 48, and birds, which saw her keeping a
succession of parrots, launching a career making costumes for pet birds to wear and
photographing her winged companions modelling her creations.
But she says adopting Samantha, a frail 100-year-old cockatoo from a pet store near
her home in Sydney, Australia, in June 2020, led to the most incredible avian bond
    she has enjoyed to date.
She said: "Samantha was up for adoption and according to the store, she was almost
100 years old. She was actually very close to death when I adopted her.
She was so frail I assumed she was only going to live for another 48 hours. I
assumed she was going to decline and go downhill very fast.
But I'm used to rehabilitating birds and bringing them back from the brink of death.
Samantha basically came back to life rejuvenated, which was wonderful.
"After two weeks of perching in front of a sunny window in my apartment and eating
fresh fruit, birdseed and calcium supplements, she really perked up.
To reach the age of 100 is quite a special achievement its a rarity even in the
    wild.

conservation calendars for local charities, even took Samantha out for photosh
