Open to the public until 29 July 2023
Bringing together major works by some of the most influential European and American artists of the post-war and contemporary periods, Alchemy examines the enduring fascination with material transformation and alchemical thinking in artmaking. The group exhibition features works by artists who have engaged with alchemical ideas at key moments in their practice, including Joseph Beuys, Anselm Kiefer, Sigmar Polke, Robert Rauschenberg, Sturtevant, Emilio Vedova and Andy Warhol. Assembling a group of art-historically significant works, including many shown for the first time in the UK, the exhibition highlights how ideas of material, artistic and philosophical transmutation both inform, and are redefined by, these pioneers of art.

Sturtevant Oldenburg Store
8 September—3 October 2022
Oldenburg store project, Candy Rack, 1967 metal rack and 100 candles.
55 years after the American artist Sturtevant (1924–2014) recreated The Store (1961) by Claes Oldenburg, Thaddaeus Ropac London is delighted to present the exhibition Sturtevant: Dialectic of Distance which retraces this groundbreaking performance.
Known for her disconcerting replicas of works by her contemporaries that would become iconic – including Andy Warhol's silkscreened flowers, Jasper Johns's flag and Frank Stella's concentric square – Sturtevant’s practice challenges the prevailing discourse around originality and authenticity in art. When Warhol was asked how he made his work he famously replied: ‘I don’t know. Ask Elaine [Sturtevant]’.

Beeswax sculptures in the shapes of houses, towers and ziggurats reminiscent of Mesopotamian religious step pyramids and Christian reliquary shrines will occupy the floors of the gallery, while brass boats will run along the walls, connecting the space, and guiding visitors through the exhibition. Alongside them, a series of works on paper created in response to the sculptures will provide a more intimate insight into the artist’s meditative and conceptual approach.
