40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering
January 30, 2025 - Elko, Nevada, United States: Jessie Veeder performs in the fireside nook at the end of the evening at the Pioneer Saloon at the Western Folklife Center. Scenes from the 40th Annual National Cowboy Poetry Gathering. The National Cowboy Poetry Gathering (formerly: Elko Cowboy Poetry Gathering), is an annual gathering celebrating cowboy poetry produced by the Western Folklife Center, that takes place in Elko, Nevada. Organized by a team of folklorists and local cowboy poets including Hal Cannon and Waddie Mitchell, the Gathering started in 1985 as a place where Western ranchers and cowboys could gather to share poems about their lives working cattle. From the beginning, it was clear these men and women had found their tribe, an artistic community that few knew existed. Three decades later, the tribe is now a nation of Western poets, musicians, artisans and storytellers, telling stories of hard work, heartbreak, hilarity, and what it means to make your way in the rangeland West. Just 20 UK visas have been issued to HGV drivers from abroad who took up the emergency offer of employment to avoid empty shelves in the run-up to Christmas, a senior minister has admitted. In the face of mounting fuel, food and goods shortages last month, it was announced that 5,000 visas would be granted to lorry drivers until the end of next February, and a further 5,500 could be applied for by poultry workers that would last until 31 December 2021.
