FEATURE - Luftaufnahmen zeigen den Fluss Rio Tinto in Spanien
Aerial photographs show the Río Tinto river in Spain, which crosses an ancient mining site and makes the water turn a variety of bright colours. Copper, silver and gold are mined here, as well as iron which turns the water red.

An ochre mix is responsible for the yellow tint of the rest of the river, which is crossed by roads which allow travel across the site. Olivier Jarry-Lacombe took these photos at the Río Tinto mine site, which has been in use since 3000BC.

These shocking photos show the damage caused by the extreme floods in Valencia three months on from the deadly natural disaster. As if it were a scene from an apocalypse movie, these images show what Valencia looks like today after the Spanish region was hit by extreme flooding in October.

The trail of devastation left behind countless damaged and overturned cars, concrete shattered into pieces, and piles of waste strewn across the land. Photographer Olivier Jarry-Lacombe, who captured these images, said the landscape was so ravaged he felt like he was on a battlefield. SEE OUR COPY FOR DETAILS.

  • PILLARS OF NORTHERN LIGHTS BY OLIVIER JARRY-LACOMBE

PILLARS OF NORTHERN LIGHTS BY OLIVIER JARRY-LACOMBE
PILLARS OF NORTHERN LIGHTS! Recent solar activity across the Arctic regions has afforded some exceptional aerial phenomena caused by ice fog. Light pillars were spotted in the skies above Karesuvanto in Finland and Kiruna in Sweden this week.

Photographer, Olivier Jarry-Lacombe said, “Sometimes, a thin layer of ice fog is present and it is then that an exceptional phenomenon can occur that is only visible in the Arctic or Antarctic polar territory, known as light pillars. A light pillar or ice pillar is an atmospheric optical phenomenon in which a vertical beam of light appears to extend above and sometimes below a light source, over the entire height of the ice cloud.”

“The effect is created by the reflection of light from tiny ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere or that make up high-altitude clouds. Pillars of light can be caused by the Sun, Moon or terrestrial sources, such as street lights, vehicles and illuminated signs. And when you are very lucky, auroras and pillars of light come together for an exceptional spectacle.” (FOTO: DUKAS/SOLENT NEWS)
