NEWS: Syrien: Die Ruinenstadt Palmyra vor den IS Angriffen
May 1, 2008 - Palmyra, Syria: Tourists visit the temple of Bel in the Roman site of Palmyra. The latest threat to the Roman site of Palmyra is the seizure of the city by Islamic radicals. Palmyra an ancient Syrian city and a Unesco world heritage site, 130 miles northeast of Damascus. It's renowned for its well-preserved statues, tombs and colonnaded streets. Before 2011, more than 150,000 tourists visited Palmyra annually. It has since fallen to Islamic State jihadists and the Foreign Office advises against all travel to Syria. It is believed Islamic State (IS) militants blew up the ancient temple of Baal Shamin in August 2015 - until then most of Palmyra's sites had been left intact. There have also been reports that IS destroyed a famous statue of a lion and mined other Palmyra treasures and temple of Bel.
