December 11, 1976, New York, New York, United States: Andy Warhol visits Lou Reed at a party for Lou. Music producer Clive Davis is at the right. On May 29, 2013, Lou Reed and John Cale, surviving members of the Velvet Underground, settled a fight with the Andy Warhol Foundation over the rights to a pop art image of a banana used on the band's first and best-known album. Velvet Underground sued the foundation in 2012 after reports it was planning to license the design for cases, sleeves and bags for Apple iPhone and iPad. Velvet Underground collaborated with Warhol in the 1960s when he designed the banana image featured on album. While the band broke up in 1972, the album lived on and is ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as 13th greatest album. In the lawsuit, the band claimed exclusive use of the banana design for merchandising and sought damages and an injunction to prevent the licensing of the image by the foundation which took ownership of Warhol's copyrights in 1987 and has licensed material to companies including Levi Strauss & Co and Campbell's Soup.
