Braving torrential rain and gale force winds, Christmas tree farmers begin their harvest one week earlier than in previous years after an unprecedented number of early orders from garden centres across the country. The muddy field in Groby, near Leicester is one of many owned by Cadeby Tree Trust who will cut and wrap more than 100,000 seasonal trees this year.

The country's largest Christmas tree festival opened last night in Melton Mowbray St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Visitors can view the 905 trees which range from full size to miniature trees every day until 3pm on Tuesday, when the businesses, clubs and people in the town who made the trees will collect them - many of them being walked through the town to be relocated to new sites for the rest of Christmas.
All the trees are themed, often with funny names. There's an interactive electronic tree, a money tree (photographed) and many trees are decorated with poppies to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of WW1.
