Just days before the 100th anniversary of Louis Bleriot's historic cross channel flight the world's oldest aeroplane, the Bleriot XI (1909), which is operated by the Shuttleworth collection in Bedfordshire, is put through its paces for the first time during the centenary year. Similar to the machine used for the Channel crossing, this machine (constructor's No.14) was one of the original aircraft at the Bleriot School at Hendon and boasts the earliest aero-engine in flying condition.

Futurism exhibition, Tate Modern, London, Britain - 10 June 2009
The first large scale showing of Futurism in Britain in thirty years. Futurist works from 1910-1914 as well as pieces from the Cubist and Orphist movements. Artists include Umberto Boccioni, Carlo Carra, Luigi Russolo, Gino Severini and Giacomo Balla. The movement set out to modernise Italian art and social attitudes and its influence spread across Europe and beyond, revolutionising the response to the dynamism of modern life.

Nicknamed "The Brazilian Bombshell", Miranda is noted for her signature fruit hat outfit she wore in her American films. As a young woman, she designed hats in a boutique before making her first recordings with composer JosuÈ de Barros in 1929. Miranda's 1930 recording of "TaÌ" ("Pra VocÍ Gostar de Mim"), written by Joubert de Carvalho, catapulted her to stardom in Brazil as the foremost interpreter of samba.
