An edible transistor made from an ingredient in toothpaste could one day be used to help to monitor and treat diseases from inside the body.
Eventually it safely dissolves when past its useful life.
The transistor is made from copper phthalocyanine, a whitening agent commonly used in toothpastes.
While copper phthalocyanine is not currently approved for use in foods, clinical trials have shown it is safe in toothpaste.
There have been no recorded reactions to the ingredient which has been used in toothpaste for more than a decade.
Researchers at Italy’s Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Milan, who developed the transistor, ran tests to see how much copper phthalocyanine the average person ingests each time they brush teeth.
It worked out to around 1 milligram per brushing — enough iun theory to manufacture approximately 10,000 edible transistors.
