Marigold Flower Growers In The Chinampas Of The San Luis Tlaxialtemalco Flower Market, Xochimilco, Mexico City
On October 1, 2025, several marigold flower growers in the chinampas of the San Luis Tlaxialtemalco Flower Market in Xochimilco, Mexico City, prepare to distribute and sell their products in honor of the Day of the Dead in Mexico, celebrated on November 1.

Marigold flower production begins in July with the sowing of seeds in trays for germination. It continues in the last week of August with planting and fertilization in seven-inch pots. In September, due to the size of the plant, the plants are separated so that the flowers reach their peak bloom in October and early November.

The marigold flower symbolizes the Day of the Dead in Mexico. Thanks to its color and aroma, it is one of the most representative offerings for the deceased. Its name comes from the Nahuatl word Cempohualxochitl, which means ''twenty-petaled flower.'' (Photo by Gerardo Vieyra/NurPhoto)
