New biomaterial regrows damaged cartilage in joints

A new bio material that successfully regenerated cartilage in knee joints has been developed by scientists.
With more work, the researchers say the new material someday could potentially be used to prevent full knee replacement surgeries, treat degenerative diseases like osteoarthritis and repair sports-related injuries like ACL tears.
Cartilage is the strong, flexible connective tissue that protects joints and bones.
It acts as a shock absorber at the end of your bones and reduces friction and prevents them from rubbing together.
The material was successfully used in the joints of a sheep.
The team behind it admit the new substance “looks like a rubbery goo.”
But the material is actually a complex network of molecular components, which work together to mimic cartilage’s natural environment in the body.
In the new study, the researchers from the USA’s North Western University applied the material to damaged cartilage in the animals’ knee joints.
Within just six months, they saw evidence of enhanced repair, including the growth of new cartilage.
OPS: Treated cartilage (stained red) showing the defect filled in thanks to the new nano material.
