Following the trench warfare in the poppy fields of Flanders, Belgium during World War I, poppies have become a symbol of remembrance of soldiers who have died during wartime.
Remembrance Day or Poppy Day has been observed since the end of the First World War to remember armed forces members who have died in the line of duty. In most countries, Remembrance Day is observed on 11 November to recall the end of First World War hostilities.

The Lochnagar Crater ( named after a nearby WW1 trench which was named by an officer after a mountain in Deeside near Balmoral in Scotland where many of the 7th Gordons, based in La Boiselle, were estate workers ) at La Boiselle, the largest crater on the Western Front, was created on the first day of the Somme offensive on 1st July 1916 at 7.28 in the moring by exploding a hugh mine of 60,000 Lbs of guncotton under the the German front line. The Crater was slowly being eroded until Richard Dunning purchased the crater in 1978 after reading about it in 'The Old Front Line' by John Masefield, so that it might be saved as a permanent memorial. Remains of both British and German Soldiers are still being found in the surrounding landscape and are buried in nearby cemeteries but marked at the Crater by crosses and Poppy Wreaths. Seen here a cross and poppy wreath in memory of Private George Nugent of the Tyneside Scottish Northumberland Fusilers who was found on this spot on the crater rim on 31st October 1998 after being reported missing in action on the 1st of July 1916. He is buried at nearby Ovillers Military Cemetery.

FEATURE - Pix of the Day: Die Bilder des Tages
A burial ceremony with full military honours for an unknown British WW1 Lancashire Fusiliers soldier and two Australian unknown soldiers at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Tyne Cot Cemetery, near Ypres in Belgium. The bodies of the three soldiers were found in what is believed to be a shell hole that was unearthed during civil engineering works along the Vifwegesstraat, near to the Tyne Cot Cemetery in May 2016. Artefacts found with the British soldier included fragments from a winter coat, shoulder titles of the Lancashire Fusiliers, service buttons, British boots, a leather belt with four cap badges attached, a smoker’s pipe and a pencil with inscription from Eagley Cricket Club near Bolton, Lancashire. Research, which has been corroborated by the JCCC, indicates that the Lancashire Fusiliers were in that location as they engaged in the Third Battle of Ypres - the Battle of Passchendaele, which took place between July and November 1917. The battle lasted a total of 105 days and the capturing of the village of Passchendaele (now spelt Passendale) came at a terrible cost as it is estimated that there were over 500,000 casualties, 42,000 of which were never recovered. The Lancashire Fusiliers alone suffered 200 dead with only a small percentage with known graves. Following the recovery of the remains and artefacts in May 2016, JCCC commissioned anthropology and DNA analysis on the British casualty which showed his age between 23-29. Despite extensive research undertaken into the Lancashire Fusiliers Regimental History, Battalion War Diaries and Eagley Cricket Club records, the JCCC has been unable to confirm the identity of the British soldier due to the significant number of casualties from the Regiment at the time.

Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry 'plant' poppies at Tower of London WWI display

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry visited the Tower of London's 'Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red' poppy installation in the Tower of London's moat to mark the centenary anniversary of the First World War. In total, 888,246 ceramic poppies will be planted in the dry moat, one for each British and Colonial fatality during the war. A team of over 8,000 volunteers from across the UK will install the poppies, with the last one being planted on Armistice Day, 11th November 2014.
