NASA astronauts from space shuttle Atlantis repair the Hubble telescope - May 2009

In this tightly cropped image, the NASA space shuttle Atlantis is seen in silhouette during solar transit, Tuesday, May 12, 2009, from Florida. This image was made before Atlantis and the crew of STS-125 had grappled the Hubble Space Telescope. {br}{br}The photographer made this image using a solar-filtered Takahashi 5-inch refracting telescope and a Canon 5D Mark II digital camera.
Repairing The Hubble Telescope
REPAIRING THE HUBBLE TELESCOPE
A "bolt removal issue" has been one of the challenges facing the NASA crew charged with repairing the ageing Hubble Space Telescope.
Astronaut Mike Massimino had to use old-fashioned brute force to remove a panel during an epic eight-hour spacewalk from the space shuttle Atlantis on Sunday (17 May).
The fourth STS-125 mission spacewalk overran by 90 minutes after Massimo and Mike Good ran into the snag while replacing a low-voltage power supply board on Hubble's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS).
NASA explains: "Massimino followed steps developed quickly at the Goddard Spaceflight Center to carefully bend and break the handrail free. At about three hours into the spacewalk, Massimino broke the handrail free allowing the spacewalkers to proceed with the day's tasks."
Other repairs on the mission, which sees the fifth and final spacewalk taking place on Monday, have included fitting a new Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS) and carrying out repairs to the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) which failed in 2007 "due to a short circuit in its backup power supply".
The Atlantis can also be glimpsed in a stunning picture which shows the craft silhouetted during solar transit. The image, taken by space fan Thierry Legault in Florida, was made on 12 May, before Atlantis and the crew of STS-125 had grappled t...

Dubai Finally Joins Global Economic Downturn
DUBAI FINALLY JOINS GLOBAL ECONOMIC DOWNTURN
Stocks around the world tumbled for the second day after Dubai World announced it was asking creditors to delay paying back its $60 billion (GBP 36.8bn) debt.
Dubai World is the emirate's main development engine that financed the construction of the mammoth coastal Palm Islands development (such as the famous Palm Jumeirah), and the World Islands, as well as managing many of the emirate's transport, logisitics and leisure industries.
The news triggered fears of a massive default and a wave of heavy losses at banks and companies exposed to its debt that could cause more financial pain just as the global economy was starting to recover.
The emirate fuelled a building boom with cheap credit but has been hit hard by the downturn.
This latest risk to lenders comes just as the global economy is starting to recover from a painful recession, with major action taken to prop up banks worldwide.

A Kylie Minogue performance and a bigger fireworks display than the Beijing Olympics were the highlights on show for the thousands of celebrities attending the opening party of the Atlantis Palm Jumeirah resort in Dubai. Movie stars, musicians, models and millionaires were present having been invited to the most lavish party ever thrown - at a cost of GBP 20m - to launch the GBP 1bn resort on the man-made, palm tree-shaped island resort in the Persian Gulf. The celebs had been invited to this "freebie of the century", with travel and accommodation in Dubai all free of charge. They were treated to pop pixie Minogue perform a 10-song medley for 45 minutes on the beach with her 113-strong dance troupe, for which she was reportedly paid the handsome fee of GBP 1.5million.
