GERMAN EMBASSY FURNISHINGS PREPARED FOR AUCTION: RIBBENTROP PLANS FOR "AFTER VICTORY".
The entire remaining contents of the former German Embassy in Carlton House Terrace have now been removed to Earl'sCourt, and are being catalogued for auction by Messrs. Knight Frank and Rutley. There are some curious indications of Ribbentrop's schemes when he occupied the Embassy as German ambassador. A wireless transmitter set was found in a penthouse on the Embassy roof, and in a desk was found a set of charts listing the names of all British warships and their movements in 1937. Portraits of Hitler and some flags have also been found, which seem to have been designed for distribution after the capture of London.
The auctioneer will be Mr Guy Coleridge, an ex army officer, who is a partner in he firm of Messrs. Knight Frank and Rutley. His wife, Mrs Coleridge, is assisting to catalogue the effects.
Photo Shows: Pfc. Leroy V Anderson of Washington DC, an American soldier working with Messrs, Knight Frank and Rutley under the American Army "on the job" Educational scheme, examines a bust of Hitler, with Mr F W Dufform of the auctioneering firm. Behind are two Nazi flags, one bearing the inset "London West" in German and the other "Central London" in German - probably intended for use after he "capture of London".
Photographs taken in the Brasserie, Earl's Court, London, where the sale will be held, and the auction broadcast to Canada and USA

'WASHINGTON' RAMS QUAY IN GALE
3 FEBRUARY 1950
Fifty miles an hour gusts swung the 30,000 tons bulk of the American liner 'Washington' against the quay wall, splitting her bows above and below the waterline as she was attempting to berth at Southampton from New York today (Friday) with 622 pasengers aboard.
Despite the efforts of six tugs, she hit the quay head on, dragged the tugs, two of which broke loose, and drifted along close to the wall, menacing the 'Athlone Castle' and the 'Aquitania'.
The liner, which looked in danger of going aground, dropped her anchors and was pulled up but another gust swung her hard against berth 105. Plates on the waterline were damaged near the bridge, and a wooden fender was driven into her port side below the waterline.

Chelsea pensioners .
NEW BOY OF THE PENSIONERS
The Royal Hospital Chelsea, founded by King Charles II in 1862 “as a retreat for veterans of the regular army who had become unfit for duty, either after 20 years’ service or as a result of wounds”. Although there are no barracks, a certain amount of kindly discipline is maintained – a fact which these old soldiers actually appreciate. At present there are 367 Chelsea Pensioners, presided over by General Sir Cameron Nicholson, and new recruits give up their outside pension on entering the Hospital. In return he is provided with his board and accommodation, clothing, a pint of beer daily or tobacco in lieu. They purchase the summer red uniform for £15 and are expected to perform a few light duties, but the majority of the time is their own. The Hospital has much to offer with companionship high on the list. For the remainder of their days the old soldier has a place of comfort and friends with whom he can swap stories of campaigns. What more could a veteran ask for?
PICTURE SHOWS: It's pay time - in the magnificent Great Hall at the Royal Hospital . Banners hang above portraits of Royalty , including those of George II and Queen Caroline , George III and Queen Charlotte , and of course , Charles II , founder of this famous institution .

USA Miami's Cubans Rejoice after Castro Cedes Power
A well dressed man is photographed while holding an anti-Castro placard in front of the Versailles restaurant in Miami's Little Havana neighborhood Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2006. The placard says in Spanish: Dead Castro the Tyrant. Stop working in Cuba ( calling for a worker's strike). Miami's Cubans took to the streets for the second day following the news that Castro had handed power to his brother Raul because of failing health. Versailles restaurant, a center of Cuban-American social life is one of the places where people have gathered. Network news operations are now encamped at the location and a line of cars full of cheering, joyful, flag waving riders has been parading around the SW 8th street Restaurant since early morning.
