Symbolic Visiting Room In Solidarity With Ahmed Souab In Tunis
Demonstrators make the victory sign while waving national flags of Tunisia during a symbolic visiting room organized by the family of lawyer and former judge Ahmed Souab to support him, in Tunis, Tunisia, on May 23, 2025. The event brings together dozens of activists, artists, civil society members, journalists, and representatives of human rights organizations who come to show their solidarity. Ahmed Souab, known for his opposition to Tunisian President Kais Saied, is detained on terrorism charges after publicly denouncing the severity of the sentences handed down in the so-called ''conspiracy against state security'' case. He is part of the legal team defending several prominent political figures who are sentenced to lengthy prison terms in the same case at the first instance. (Photo by Chedly Ben Ibrahim/NurPhoto) -

Supporters hold a giant poster of Tunisian President Kais Saied as they attend a rally held by supporters of Tunisian President Kais Saied on Labour Day, in Tunis, Tunisia, on May 1, 2025, to protest against what they consider foreign interference in the country's internal affairs. The demonstration follows criticism from several international actors, including France, Germany, and the United Nations, who denounce the lack of guarantees for a ''fair'' trial after several prominent opposition figures receive heavy prison terms in the so-called ''conspiracy against state security'' trial. Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert sentenced to eight months in prison for corruption, Jerusalem, Israel - 25 May 2015
Olmert lawyers appealed the sentence and the court agreed to their request to hold off the sentence for 45 days for time to appeal. The court had convicted Olmert in March of illegally receiving, using and concealing at least $153,950 (out of an alleged $600,000) funds in envelopes from New York businessman Morris Talansky between 1993 and 2002, with the case itself dating back to 2008. The jail sentence is Olmert's second following a six year sentence he received in the Holyland real estate trial on a conviction for bribery.
While he has appealed that conviction and sentence, the Supreme Court did not sound sympathetic when it heard the appeal.

Usman Khan, 28, from Stock-on-Trent, Staffordshire, who has been identified by Scotland Yard as the man responsible for yesterday's London Bridge terrorist attack which resulted in a man and a woman being killed before Khan was overpowered by members of the public armed with makeshift weapons and shot dead by police. Anti-terror police have raided a house in the Staffordshire area which was lilnked to Khan. Before the attack Khan had been attending a seminar in FishmongerÕs Hall about prisoner rehabilitation and had threatened to blow up the building before he began his murder spree. Khan had been released from prison in December 2018 after he was one of nine British based terrorists who were jailed on February 9 2012 after they admitted terrorism offences, including four who pleaded guilty to planning to detonate a bomb at the London Stock Exchange. Khan was given an indeterminate sentence and ordered to serve at least 8 years when he admitted attending operational meetings in Roath Park, Cardiff, and in a Newport country park, fundraising for terrorist training, preparing to travel abroad and assisting others to travel abroad. They were arrested in December 2010 and were set to stand trial at Woolwich Crown Court. The four Stock Exchange plotters admitted engaging in conduct in preparation for acts of terrorism and the five others pleaded guilty to other terrorism offences. The terrorist plotters were inspired by al-qaeda, particularly by the preachings of the late radical extremist Anwar Al-Awlaki. They planned to send five mail bombs to various targets during the run up to Christmas 2010 and a "Mumbai-style" atrocity. A hand-written target list found at one of their homes had the names and addresses of London Mayor Boris Johnson, two rabbis, the Stock Exchange and the US embassy

George Michael
George Michael at Highbury Corner Magistrates court for sentencing, London, Britain - 14 Sep 2010
George Michael has been sentenced to eight weeks in jail after admitting crashing his car while under the influence of cannabis. At a hearing at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court in London the singer was told that he will spend half of the sentence behind bars and the other half on licence. He was also banned from driving for five years and ordered to pay a GBP 1,250 fine, GBP 100 costs and a GBP 15 victim surcharge. On 4 July this year Police found the singer slumped at the wheel of Range Rover and "spaced out" after crashing it into the side of a building. The court heard that before the accident Michael had taken a "dangerous and unpredictable mix" of prescription drugs and cannabis. Before giving sentence today District Judge John Perkins commented: "It does not appear that you took proper steps to deal with what is clearly an addiction to cannabis. That's a mistake which puts you and, on this occasion, the public at risk." He added that a jail term was inevitable due to Michael's previous conviction.
