Yinka Shonibare Refugee Astronaut (2015-ongoing) 'introduces a life-sized nomadic astronaut adorned with “African” fabric, equipped to navigate ecological and humanitarian crises. Carrying a mesh sack filled with worldly possessions, the figure symbolises the challenges of displacement. Originating from Shonibare’s contemplation of space as a potential refuge, the artwork serves as a cautionary tale on environmental negligence and capitalism, challenging the unsustainable pursuit of perpetual growth. It also subverts colonial connotations, presenting a refugee astronaut in stark contrast to the colonial instinct of conquering the world. In a cautionary tone, Shonibare emphasises that the artwork serves as a warning, urging contemplation of the potential consequences of inaction regarding rising water levels and the resulting displacement of people. For Shonibare, the overarching question of humanity is incredibly diverse, emphasising the recognition that there is no singular way to be human.' Artwork inside the main Arsenale exhibition space. Venice Biennale. Venice, Italy.

Anna Maria Maiolino, 'INDO & VINDO' (2024). 'One of the two winners of this Biennale’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, Anna Maria Maiolino presents (just outside the main Arsenale hall) a new, site-specific installation, INDO & VINDO (2024), consisting of a sculpture of unfired earthen clay that appears like tendrils or intestines and is draped over a bench-like structure and placed along the shelving and affixed to chicken-wire armature of this storeroom on the Arsenale grounds. Because this clay is not fired, it will eventually dry out and likely disintegrate. The ephemeral quality of the material, which can survive thousands of years when heated, points to the fleetingness of life, of our time here, there, everywhere.' - ARTNEWS. Venice Biennale. Rehearsal for Swan Lake, 2024 (with Oksana Serheieva), video 150 min, + LIVE PERFORMANCE by Oksana Serheieva, from 20 April to 5 May 2024. Every Day at 1.30pm, 4pm and 6.30pm. Austria pavilion.
'The Austrian Pavilion at the Biennale Arte 2024 in Venice is designed by Anna Jermolaewa and curated by Gabriele Spindler. In her work, the artist, who was born in Leningrad (USSR) and has lived in Vienna since 1989, has demonstrated again and again that she is a keen observer of human life, its societal conditions and political preconditions. For the Austrian contribution, Jermolaewa covers a broad spectrum ranging from her personal migration experiences to forms of non-violent resistance against authoritarian regimes. The presentation shown at the Pavilion will comprise videos, installations, luminous objects and sound as well as performative elements combining newly developed works and extensions of existing works of the artist.
'Anna Jermolaewa’s contribution for the Austrian Pavilion blends in excellently with the general theme of the Art Biennale 2024 defined by curator Adriano Pedrosa: Stranieri Ovunque – Foreigners Everywhere centers on the topics of foreign lands, migration as well as issues of national identity and cultural diversity and focuses on artists who personally experienced flight and migration.

Insider art: Vatican sets up Biennale pavilion at Venice women's jail
Pope Francis to attend installation that includes short film featuring Zoe Saldana and Giudecca inmates.
Originally a convent dating to the 13th century, and once a reformatory for prostitutes, the Giudecca women's prison, set on an island in the Venetian lagoon, will this summer perform a quite different role: as the official pavilion for the Vatican at this year's Venice Biennale.
Pope Francis is due to attend on 28 April - the first pontifical visit to the Biennale since it was founded in 1895. In the women's prison he will see a work by Maurizio Cattelan, who notoriously created a hyper-real sculpture in 1999 depicting Pope John Paul II struck down by a meteorite.

BRAZIL
Ka’a Pûera: we are walking birds
'Ka’a Pûera has a double meaning: it is both a space in the field and a bird camouflaging itself with the forest floor. This duplicity is essential to the concept of the Hãhãwpuá Pavilion (ancestral territory), which brings Brazil’s history of resistance to life through the works of Glicéria Tupinambá, Olinda Tupinambá, Ziel Karapotó, and the Tupinambá Community of the Serra do Padeiro and Olivença villages in Bahia. Glicéria Tupinambá summons the mantles of her people and forms Okará Assojaba, the council of listening elders. Produced after meetings with Grupo Atã, formed of Tupinambá youths and elders, Dobra do tempo infinito [Fold of Infinite Time] presents a video installation with trawling nets that form connections between their weaves and traditional costumes. Ziel Karapotó’s installation combines fired cartridges and maracas, confronting colonial processes, while Olinda Tupinambá amplifies the voice of Kaapora, a spiritual entity that watches over our relationship with the planet.
The exhibition is held in the year that one of the mantles returns to Brazil from Europe, where it has been since 1699, updating issues of colonization — and finding the Tupinambá and over 300 Indigenous peoples in Brazil who continue their struggles as Ka’a Pûera, birds that walk over resurgent forests.
