NEWS: West Bank: Heftige Auseinandersetzungen in Bethlehem
Oct. 23, 2015 - Bethlehem, West Bank - Israeli soldiers look on, during demonstrations in the West Bank city of Bethlehem. Violent confrontations between Palestinian youth and Israeli soldiers continued across most cities in the West Bank. In Bethlehem, Palestinian youth marched towards the Israeli military checkpoint and clashed with Israeli soldiers once again. One day before, on October 22 2015, Israeli soldiers erected cement blockades in the streets of Bethlehem, as well as closing Checkpoint 300, the main passage between Northern Bethlehem and Jerusalem for Palestinians. Israeli forces closed the checkpoint in order to allow Jewish pilgrims to pray at the site of Rachels Tomb, which is on the other side of the military checkpoint in Bethlehem. Israeli soldiers were reluctant to engage with Palestinian youth in Bethlehem, until the Jewish pilgrims left the site. Since the beginning of the violence that started in October between Palestinians and Israelis, at least 50 Palestinians have been killed in clashes with Israeli soldiers or during alleged stabbing attacked against Israelis. During the same time, at least nine Israelis have also been killed (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)
