Picture MUST credit: Heritage Auctions
A battered wooden sled which had a starring role in the Orson Welles Hollywood classic movie Citizen Kane has sold for $14.75 million USD / €12.72 million euros at auction.
It is said to be the second most-valuable piece of movie memorabilia ever sold.
The highest was the 2024 sale of the Ruby Slippers from Judy Garland’s The Wizard of Oz for $32.5 million USD / €28 million euros.
The price includes buyer’s premium.
The iconic prop, known as the Rosebud sled, has belonged to Gremlins film director Joe Dante since 1984.
Only a few versions were produced for the 1941 Citizen Kane production
The previous auction records for an example were $60,500 USD / €52.170 euros sold to producer-director Steven Spielberg in 1982, and $233,000 USD / €200.925 euros to an anonymous buyer in 1996.
The sled is featured in opening scenes where the young Charles Kane is playing with it in the snow before he is taken away from his parents.
It later appears after his death being burned along with many of the adult Kane’s belongings considered junk.
Film buffs say the sled is a powerful symbol representing Kane's lost childhood innocence and the unfulfilled longing for a simpler, happier past.
It is said to embody a time before his life was shaped by wealth, power, and the trauma of being taken from his family.
