Homeless of Athens
Jan. 8, 2013-Athens, Greece: Psychologists and sociologists from the City of Athens Homeless Foundation (K.Y.A.D.A) roam the city with a van full of blankets, sandwiches, raisins and juices to give to the homeless. They suggest hostels for short term accommodation where the homeless can go for a bath, eat and sleep especially on very cold days. Research data suggest that the number of street homeless people and those in transitory shelters in the city of Athens is approximately 11,000. 3,000 Greeks and 8,000 foreigners. Poverty in Greece increases due to unemployment, high -extra- illegal taxes. The rise in the cost of living threatens Greeks' ability to buy food. Pensioners feel it the most. December 2012, Athens, Greece: Konstadinos Polychronopoulos, 46, is the Other Human who cooks everyday in different places in Athens to share lunch with everybody. Konstadinos Polychronopoulos was working successfully in marketing area of tourism, until 2009 when fired. For two years he stayed at home, doing nothing, fall to melancholy. The idea of Social Kitchen that he gave the name "The Other Human", began when he noticed in the street food market, two kids, and then more people of various ages, nationalities and social levels rummaging through rubbish to find food. All of them couldn't afford to buy any food. The first obvious response was to cook his own food from home and distribute it in the public market places. ÒWe asked each food stall-merchant to volunteer one item from their bench so we could continue the next day. We cook in street for people and we eat together. In this way we come together and break through any shame or embarrassment which might be an issue for anyoneÓ he says. " I was jobless, and I was eating at home alone. Now, I am socially active and effective and I eat together with other people. " (Maro Kouri/Polaris)
