Afghan park offers solitude and beauty
Band-e Amir has become the nation's soothing antidote to the daily horrors elsewhere of improvised bombs, suicide attacks and bribe-hungry police. Partly that's due to the peacefulness and startling beauty of the remote region, which is tucked away high in the Hindu Kush of Central Afghanistan, and partly because four years ago it became Afghanistan's first national park. Afghan park offers solitude and beauty
Many visitors believe the waters at Band-e Amir have healing powers. Women who take a dip in the lakes, usually seeking a cure for illness or to boost their fertility, bath fully clothed but still out of sight of the men for reasons of modesty. The park is building a special bathing area to protect that modesty. This woman is drying out some of her clothes after a dip. (Photo by Jay Price/MCT/Sipa USA)
