A lucky dog has been rescued (31st Aug) after spending nine days stranded without food or water on a cliff in Devon. Springer Spaniel Sprig spent over a week stuck on a rocky ledge at the foot of the highest cliffs in England. And it was only by chance that he was spotted by Minehead's volunteer RNLI lifeboat crew while they were on an exercise close to Foreland Point in north Devon. The crew steered their boat closer to the cliffs after spotting a sheep that they believed was trapped. As they turned their vessel away they spotted another flash of movement some way below the animal. Helmsman Andrew Escott comments: "We went in as close as we could then we could see it was a dog. It was about 30 feet above the water and we couldn't work out how it had got in that position".

'Mugly' who is the world's ugliest dog, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, Britain - 09 Aug 2012

Mugly And Proud Of It
Pet pooch Mugly is still celebrating after winning the World's Ugliest Dog competition.
The 8-year-old Chinese Crested faced stiff competition from 28 other dogs during the annual contest in northern California.
However, the British mutt ultimately emerged triumphant thanks to his 'natural ugliness'.
He and proud owner Bev Nicholson walked away with top prize of $1,000 and a year's worth of dog cookies thanks his snaggletooth smile, beady eyes and white whiskers.
And it's not the first time Mugly's unusual looks have earned him accolades as he was named Britain's ugliest dog in 2005.
Chinese crested dogs usually have white hair around their heads and tails, but Mugly has just a few whiskers.
Due to this he was rejected by breeders and Bev adopted him as a puppy from a rescue shelter.
Mugly now lives in Peterborough with Bev, her son Glenn, 25, and two other doggy pals.
There is fellow Chinese crested 'Eddie', nine, whose was abused by his previous owner, and tiny Yorkie 'Millie', five, a former puppy farm bitch used for breeding.
With his lack of fur making him extra-sensitive to the sun and cold, Mugly has an extensive wardrobe of hoodie, t-shirts and, for special occasions, fancy dress.
According to Bev, Mugly gets his fair share of rude comments when they go for a walk but he also has a legion of fans, including 2,000 followers on Twitter.

A company has launched a vehicle which can be driven on land, or flown in the air.
The Personal Air and Land Vehicle (PAL-V), created by Dutch engineers, completed its first test flight and will be put on the market within a year. It is expected to cost GBP 175,000.
The PAL-V reaches speeds up to 110mph and unlike other planes it only needs 540ft of runway to get off the ground, as well as having a range of 315 miles.
It can match its air speed on the ground too and crucially for an aircraft, the makers say it cannot stall.
The gyrocopter creates lift through forward motion from a rotor on its back.
PAL-V co-founder Robert Dingemanse said: "We are proud to announce the successful maiden flight of the PAL-V and very excited to be approached almost daily by potential customers and dealers wanting to be a part of this exciting project.
"Now it is possible to fly over a mountain and then drive at the other end."

Manson Snubs Locals At Irish Reception

The controversial rocker Marilyn Manson and his new bride Dita Von Teese refused to enter the Traditional Irish Pub, McCarthys Bar in the sleepy village of Fethard in Co. Tipperary, which they wanted to have their post wedding reception in, as there were a few local people in the bar. As Manson was on route his PA argued with the owner to remove the handful of villagers from the bar claiming: "When I walked in the whole place stopped and stared, can you imagine what will happen when Mr. Manson arrives?" according to a source. The bar owner refused to order his regulars out of the bar so Manson's PA called back to the soon-to-arrive guests and ordered their fleet of cars to turn back. But unfortunately for her they were already entering the narrow village and had to drive through past our waiting photographer. Manson's new wife, Dita, threw her coat over his face to protect him from our lenses and the entourage, which included Lisa Marie Presley, headed off to the nearby Castle where the Wedding Ceremony was held at his friend's Castle, Gurteen Le Poer.
