In 1978 the islands were designated a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in 1986 the Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve was created to protect the surrounding waters. August 8, 2024 - Galapagos Islands, Ecuador: A man made pile of skulls, shells, seaweed and other natural artifacts punctuates the entrance to the short trail to the Galapagos Post Office from Post Office Bay on Florina Island. The Post office, established in 1793 by whalers who left a wooden barrel as a makeshift post office for sailors to leave letters for delivery by others heading home. The entire concept relies on the honor system and today is carried on by tourists.
