Chanel pairs up with Manchester for tweedy catwalk show
French fashion house parades baker boy caps for show in UK city famed for its textile heritage.

There was general agreement that Manchester was a surprising choice for a Chanel show. A street catwalk in the northern quarter of the city was braced for a meeting of two very different vibes. Chanel is pearls, Manchester is all grit. Chanel is the mecca of status handbags, Manchester the city described by the historian AJP Taylor as "the only place in England which escapes our characteristic vice of snobbery".

On Thomas Street, in the northern quarter, the bar of the Bay Horse Tavern was doing a brisk trade in (free) champagne. Clients in bespoke gowns posed for selfies outside a tattoo parlour as New Order took their front-row seats.

Chanel unveils its latest Metiers d'Art collection in the heart of Manchester's Northern Quarter. Around 600 celebrities and guests are invited to the prestigious fashion launch which takes place annually in a different venue around the world. The show is taking place on a temporary outdoor runway which has been specially constructed with a huge glass canopy to provide protection from the city's infamous rainy weather. The Northern Quarter was once home to more than 100 working cotton mills and scores of fashion showrooms and textile warehouses. The area is still at the core of Manchester's fashion design district and in recent years has proved a magnet for other creative industries and tourists attracted by its bohemian vibe, quirky independent shops and vinyl music stores.
