UK Carrier Strike Group 2021
Pictured: One of two newly qualified pilots landing an F35B Lightning Jet on board HMS Queen Elizabeth for their first time.
Today 14th August 2021, 617 Squadron welcome two more pilots to their squadrons. The both F35B Lightning Jet pilots conducted their first landing and take off from HMS Queen Elizabeth.
The United Kingdom and the United States of America have been proving interoperability between their ships and strike fighter squadrons while at sea.
F-35B Lightning II jets from 617 Squadron and from United States Marine Corps VMFA 211 are embarked on the Royal Navy flagship HMS Queen Elizabeth and they have been conducting sorties with the aircraft of US Navy amphibious assault ship USS America (LHA 6). Joint exercising between the UK Carrier Strike Group and the US Expeditionary Strike Group 7 have covered a rang of serials, including Naval Gunfire Support to amphibious landings, Replenishment at Sea and joint flying.
HMS Queen Elizabeth is the deployed flag ship for Carrier Strike Group 21(CSG21). CSG21 will see the ship along with the Strike Group work with over 40 countries from around the world. The Strike Group will operate and exercise with other Countries Navies and Air Forces during the 7 month deployment.
The Strike Group includes ships from the United States Navy, The Dutch Navy, and Marines from the US Marine Corps. As well as UK Frigates, Destroyers two RFA supply ships and air assets from 617 Sqn, 820 NAS, 815 NAS and 845 NAS. Exercise LION STAR 5-Cyprus
53 Enabling and Headquarters Sqn, British Army conduct patrols as part of Ex LION STAR 5 at RAF Akrotiri with a staged medevac from 84 Squadron (search and Rescue), RAF Akrotiri, Cyprus.
RAF Akrotiri hosted 53 Enabling and Headquarters Squadron (provides communication, catering and administrative output and port enabling capabilities to 104 Logistics Brigade), whilst they conducted Exercise LION STAR.
Working with 84 Sqn the exercise, conducted over four weeks with challenging temperatures, was a resounding success, demonstrating preparedness at its best.© UK MOD Crown copyright / eyevine

Pictured is an RAF Flight Sergeant (from 27 Sqn, RAF Odiham), he operates as the rear crewman as the Chinook transits through the Hombori mountains in Mali at sunset.
The Royal Air Force Chinooks currently deployed in Mali in support of French Military Operations there have passed a significant milestone after recording 3000 hours of operational flight time.
The milestone was passed by 1310 Flight, the RAF detachment that operates the CH-47 Chinooks in Mali and is primarily committed to conducting flight operations in support of the French Operation Barkhane, a counter-terrorist operation across the Sahel region of West Africa.

Armed Forces personnel working to keep British people safe at Christmas

Thousands of Armed Forces personnel will be working across the globe this Christmas to help keep Britain safe, so people at home can enjoy the festive season.
The Armed Forces are on duty 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, and Christmas is no exception. This year, around 6,400 sailors, marines, soldiers, airmen and airwomen will be deployed on operations.
From Somalia and Ukraine to efforts to protect British people against coronavirus and threats here in the United Kingdom, the Armed Forces will be deployed across all corners of the globe taking part in 39 operations across 46 different countries.

RAF TYPHOONS TRAIN ALONGSIDE THE TURKISH AIR FORCE
A Typhoon FGR4 taking part in air to air refuelling whilst en route to Konya.
RAF Personnel and Typhoons have conducted a week of training in Turkey as part of a package of the NATO Alliance’s assurance measures to one of its key allies.
As part of the UK’s contribution in delivering on our NATO commitment of Tailored Assurance Measures to Turkey, IX(B) Sqn Typhoons based at RAF Lossiemouth in Scotland, spent 3 days exercising alongside the Turkish Airforce F16s at the 3rd Main Jet base, Konya.
Operating away from the home base offers a range of training opportunities for the aircrew as well as those in support roles; aircraft engineers formed the bulk of the detachment, but equally important were the logistics, ops, movements, security and media personnel all of whom had vital roles to play to ensure the success of the visit.
For the pilots, flying alongside other nations provides an invaluable insight to each-other’s tactics and procedures. During the week, each of the pilots got to fly against their Turkish counterparts in 1 v 1 Air Combat missions gaining a greater understanding of each other’s capabilities.
The Typhoons arrived in Konya on the 16th Nov supported a Voyager aircraft from RAF Brize Norton, which provided Air-to Air Refuelling for the 6-hour sortie across Europe from RAF Lossiemouth. They met with the advance party who had arrived a few days earlier, having brought in engineering equipment by A400M, an aircraft type which is also operated by the Turkish Air Force. © MOD / Crown Copyright / eyevine

The Royal Air Force has been involved in a series of sorties enabling the Parachute Regiment to conduct an exercise in Ukraine.
Two RAF Hercules C130 aircraft flown by 47 Squadron from RAF Brize Norton transited across Europe with one containing members of 16 Air Assault Brigade, The Parachute Regiment, who parachuted onto the landing site. The other containing a series of cargo pallets of supplies that would be airdropped into the training area alongside them.

A crew from C Flt, 18 Sqn, RAF Odiham, operating on Op NEWCOMBE as part of 1310 Flt. Working in conjunction with RAF and British Army personnel from Joint Helicopter Support Squadron, RAF Benson. Tasking in support of the French, Groupement Tactique Desert de l'Air (GTD-A).
It is currently rainy season in the Sahel, making ground movement difficult. The unique heavy lift capability of the Chinook allowed a replacement vehicle to be delivered over a long distance where ground movement is difficult.
Personnel from RAF Odiham have been deployed in non-combat roles in Mali since 2018 with the aircraft contributing a unique logistical capability to the French-led operation.
The Chinooks and aircrew allow French troops to cover a much larger field of operations by moving personnel to the front-line of activity, eliminating the need for dangerous road moves, and help move vital support equipment to strategic locations.

CH47 asset rotation. Oshkosh redeployment following a reduction from full night stop to a day tasking. Excellent effort from all parties, TSW, 1AMW, 99Sqn ALM, Op NEWCOMBE DLG, Op NEWCOMBE CH47 Engineers. TSW were able to, at very short notice provide, the C17 with an uplift of fuel from the online Oshkosh, whilst simultaneously on-loading the returning Oshkosh. Fantastic flexibility enabled the return of a high profile asset, against a challenging timeframe. This task highlights the “can do” attitude found within the Logistics Branch and Trades.

Members of 1 Squadron RAF Regiment are seen here on exercise Blazing Chariot on Salisbury Plains.
1 Squadron RAF Regiment is a field squadron of the RAF Regiment in the Royal Air Force. Its mission is protection of RAF bases from ground attack, and patrolling a large area around main operating bases abroad, in order to defend aircraft on ingress and egress from surface to air attack. It is currently based at RAF Honington.
The Squadron practiced its ability to mobilize at short notice when most of the Squadron deployed to Salisbury Plain Training Area for a 2-week period on Ex BLAZING CHARIOT. With the support of the Force Protection Force HQ Intelligence Cell, an engaging scenario was built to ensure the progression of the Squadron from section strength (8 people) actions through to squadron level, employing the Squadron's Armoured Vehicle (Wheeled) platforms. The Training Team worked tirelessly to ensure that the commanders and men of 1 Squadron were fully prepared for any future deployments.

RAF 2020 photo competition. A Typhoon FGR. Mk4 of 29 Squadron Operational Conversion Unit RAF Coningsby taxis after another training flight. 29 Squadron are responsible for the converstion of fast jet pilots onto the Typhoon used by the Royal Air Force. Its a hot day at RAF Coningsby as you can really see the jet wash these powerful machines produce.

RAF Brize Norton is home to the RAF's Strategic and Tactical Air Transport (AT) and Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) forces, as well as host to many lodger and reserve units.
The Airbus A400M Atlas is a European, four-engine turboprop military transport aircraft. It was designed by Airbus Military (now Airbus Defence and Space) as a tactical airlifter with strategic capabilities to replace older transport aircraft, such as the Transall C-160 and the Lockheed C-130 Hercules.

2020 ROYAL AIR FORCE PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION RESULTS
RAF 2020 photo competition. Image shows an Airbus Voyager (AirTanker) flying in support of an Op TANSOR call, or Quick Reaction Alert.
Voyager is the RAF’s sole air-to-air refuelling (AAR) tanker and also operates as a strategic air transport. The aircraft is in service as the Voyager KC.Mk 2, equipped with two underwing pods for refuelling fast jets, and as the Voyager KC.Mk 3, with an additional centreline hose for use by large aircraft.
RAF Brize Norton is home to the RAF's Strategic and Tactical Air Transport (AT) and Air-to-Air Refuelling (AAR) forces, as well as host to many lodger and reserve units.
This image was one of 900 images submitted to this year’s RAF Photographic Competition and although not placed by the judges, it highlights the exceptionally high standard of work carried by RAF Photographers over the past year.
