Scientists investigating new planet-friendly foods have created rice grains with lab grown animal muscle and fat cells inside them.

It does not sound mouthwatering but the dish is a “nutritious and flavourful” hybrid food that could offer a more affordable protein alternative with a smaller carbon footprint.

In animals, biological scaffolds help guide and support the cells’ three-dimensional growth to form tissue and organs.

To cultivate cell-cultured meat, the team from Yonsei University, South Korea, mimicked this cellular environment using rice.

Rice grains are porous and have organised structures, providing a solid scaffold to house animal-derived cells in the nooks and crannies.

Certain molecules found in rice can also nourish and promote the growth of these cells, making rice an ideal platform.

The team first coated rice with fish gelatine, a safe and edible ingredient that helps cells latch onto the rice better.

Cow muscle and fat stem cells were then seeded into the rice and left to culture in the petri dish for up to 11 days.

The harvested final product is a cell-cultured beef rice with main ingredients that meet food safety requirements and have a low risk of triggering food allergies.

A free standing camera is promising to revolutionise personal fitness by gauging a persons body’s metrics using a visual scan.
The device is said to measure body fat and muscle mass and create an efficient workout based on the readings.
Users stand in front of the US-designed FitMe which also provides health statistics, tracks workout progress and offer tips for a healthier life style.
The FitMe stands on any tabletop surface and utilises an array of sensors to including a combination of cameras, stereo sensors and infrared dot projectors which track movement.
The device captures a comprehensive 3D full-body scan with a claimed 900,000 depth points or more.
The scan data then gets fed into FitMe’s artificial intelligence computer which processes the data and calculates body measurements with 98% accuracy.
It offers analytical data scales or a measuring tape cannot.
The AI also offers a comprehensive workout and nutrition plan based on the user’s stated goals, whether it’s muscle growth, fat loss, strength-building, endurance, or recomposition.
A spokesperson for the California based FitMe Labs which created the device, said it was inspired by the fact not everyone can afford a personalised trainer.

A pocket sized portable 3D body mapping camera that provides users with accurate measurements has been developed.

The Naked Lens device gives measurements of body fat percentage, lean mass percentage, and body measurements, alongside a unique 3D avatar.

It is aimed at fitness professionals who want to motivate their clients with accurate tracking, or individuals who are looking to monitor their fitness progress, health goals, or are just curious about their body composition.

It has been created by USA-based Prism Labs.

Body composition tracking gives a more accurate view of health when compared to weight and body mass index known as BMI.

The 3D body measurements give a granular view of how diet and exercise is changing a person’s body.

However, historically body composition scans have been expensive and inconvenient to access, and individual body measurements are time consuming to gather and difficult to do accurately each time.

Naked Lens lets customers track their body composition and measurements at a time and place convenient to them, with the company claiming the scanning process takes only 10 seconds.

It has a tripod and users set the device to record them as they rotate their body in front of it.

Naked Lens userscan pull their body composition data into Apple Health and track the progress of their fitness journeys.

The device is just 11.4 cm tall, 5cm wide and 5cm deep.

OPS: The Naked Lens requires a 10 second spin by the user in front of it from which it then generates a 3D avatar on an app using artificial intelligence
