NEWS - Hawaii: Aktiver Kilauea Vulkan
August 8, 2018 - Kilauea / Oahu, Hawaii, United States: HVO scientists checking on the status of the lower East Rift Zone fissures this morning reported that no audible noise could be heard from the fissure 8 cone (near center). The Kilauea volcano has been highly active for the past three months, forging a path of destruction and upending the lives of Hawaii's residents. Homes have been decimated by lava flowing across the island, while the summit of the volcano has continued to change. It is one of five volcanoes on the Big Island and is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The current eruption started on May 4 and shows no sign of subsiding. NEWS - Hawaii: Aktiver Kilauea Vulkan
July 17, 2018 - Pahao, Island of Hawaii (Big Island), Hawaii, U.S. - During their overflight, scientists used a telephoto lens to photograph the surface of the fissure 8 lava channel. Incandescent lava is visible through pieces of darker crust that forms as the flow surface cools. Note the apparent symmetry on either side of the channel center, where lava flows more quickly than it does along the channel margins, a visual representation of flow velocity across the channel width (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)

July 16, 2018 - Kilauea / Oahu, Hawaii, United States: A radar gun, similar to that used in traffic enforcement, is one way that the approximate speed of lava can be measured as it exits the fissure 8 vent. At the time of this measurement, the flow velocity averaged 18 miles per hour. The Kilauea volcano has been highly active for the past two months, forging a path of destruction and upending the lives of Hawaii's residents. Homes have been decimated by lava flowing across the island, while the summit of the volcano has continued to change. It is one of five volcanoes on the Big Island and is one of the world's most active volcanoes. The current eruption started on May 4 and shows no sign of subsiding. June 4, 2018 - Kilauea, Oahu, Hawaii, Honolulu: Overflight photograph at approximately 6:13 a.m. HST shows the lava flow originating from Fissure 8 (not visible in photograph) entering Kapoho Bay. The ocean entry was reported to have occurred by 10:30 p.m. on the night of June 3, 2018. Kilauea volcano began a once-in-a-century-scale eruption on May 3. Magma has drained from Kilauea's summit lava lake and flowed around 25 miles east underground, bursting out of about two dozen giant cracks or fissures near the plant. Over the weekend, there were more than 250 earthquakes at Kilauea's summit, with four explosions on Saturday sending ash as high as 12,000-15,000 feet. May 24, 2018 - Kilauea, Hawaii, United States: Poor weather at the summit of K?lauea has obscured views of Halema'uma'u for much of today, but a brief break in the weather around noon allowed HVO's webcam to capture this image of an ash plume rising from the crater at 12:17 p.m. HST. Even though weather has obscured visual observations of the ongoing summit explosions, HVO scientists are able to track them using signals from monitoring instruments, such as seismometers. The Kilauea volcano erupted May 17 sending ash 30,000 feet into the air and forcing residents to evacuate. Fresh magma has started to mix with decades-old magma, sending a flow of lava into roads and to the ocean. Thousands of people who live near the lava flows have been forced to evacuate their homes. At least 23 fissures have been created by Kilauea's heightened activity. One fissure is releasing lava that has reached Highway 137, shutting down a four-mile stretch of the road, and dozens of homes have been destroyed. Officials are also warning residents about toxic sulfur dioxide gas released into the air from the fissures. (USGS / Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) *** Local Caption *** 06214695
