July 19, 2018 - New York, New York, United States: New Yorkers and tourists watch the scene unfold after an underground steam pipe exploded at 21 St and Fifth Avenue. An aging steam pipe containing cancer-causing asbestos exploded early morning, spewing a geyser of white vapor 10 stories high and forcing an evacuation of 49 buildings.
Five people, including three civilians, suffered minor injuries from the blast, and officials warned people who may have gotten material on them to bag their clothes and shower immediately as a precaution. (Matthew McDermott/Polaris) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS)

Massive steam pipe explosion in midtown Manhattan
A 24-inch underground steam pipe dating from 1924 blew up, tearing through Manhattan's 41st street near Grand Central Terminal and swallowing a tow truck. The blast killed one person and injured over two-dozen more. Although the explosion was not terrorism, the blast caused a brief panic about a possible attack. A geyser of steam and mud shot from the center of the blast, generating a tremendous roar and rising higher than the nearby 77-story Chrysler Building. ///
