Called the RooBadge, it emits species-specific sounds to drive away kangaroos and reduce the risk to drivers of animal collisions.
There are plans to eventually adapt the device to deter deer and other road-tripping wildlife worldwide.
The German automobile manufacturer is looking at a unit that could be used by other brands.
In Australia, kangaroo make up more than 80% of all accidents with wildlife.
Their strength and speed, they can do massive damage to a car while many hundreds of the hopping marsupials die on the road every year.
Volkswagen teamed up with wildlife rescue organisation WIRES and kangaroo behaviourists from Australia’s University of Melbourne to develop the RooBadge.
It will initially be an aftermarket accessory for the VW Amarok flat bed truck, replacing the existing front badge.
The team identified sounds kangaroos respond to sounds such as bird alarm calls, predatory sounds, and distress or aggressive calls.
