The London Ambulance Service today reported a large increase in emergency calls from patients with breathing difficulties, as the Saharan dust smog covered the capital for a second day.
The LAS responded to 227 cases involving breathing problems yesterday - a 14 per cent increase on the normal weekday level of about 200. The service urged Londoners only to call 999 in an emergency, to help it cope during this 'busy time'.
'Very high' levels of air pollution were recorded in the capital, with smog levels in Stanmore reaching the Department for the EnvironmentÕs maximum rating of 10 at 7am.
Seven other areas, including Haringey, Eltham and Camden, were found to have high levels of PM2.5 particles. David Cameron was unable to go for his regular morning run during a visit to Manchester as much of the country was affected.
