Camera can see the world as different animals do
Ferrari Press Agency
Animal text 1

Pictures MUST credit: University of Sussex
A new camera system which allows it to accurately replicate the colours that different animals see in natural settings has been developed/
Animals perceive the world differently because of the capabilities of the photoreceptors in their eyes.
For example, honeybees and some species of bird can see Ultra Violet which is outside the range of human perception.
Reconstructing the colours that animals actually see can help scientists better understand how they communicate and navigate the world around them.
The novel camera and software system captures animal-view videos of moving objects under natural lighting conditions.
The camera simultaneously records videos in four colour channels: blue, green, red and UV.
This data can be processed to produce an accurate video of how those colours are perceived by animals, based on existing knowledge of the photoreceptors in their eyes.
The system is built from commercially available cameras, housed in a modular, 3D-printed casing.

'In Plain Sight’, a major exhibition exploring the different ways we see and are seen. Bringing together 144 objects and artworks, it will invite visitors to encounter different experiences of sighted, partially sighted and blind people to consider the subjectivities of vision and blindness and question the central place sight holds in human society.
In the UK, more than 2 million people live with sight loss and 69% of the population wear corrective eyewear or have had laser eye surgery, according to figures from the NHS. 'In Plain Sight’ will feature exquisite examples of eyewear from the 1600s to the present day, reflecting evolving design innovations and style, as well as contemporary artworks and commissions, and historical and scientific material investigating visual perception.

Image of an Army reservist looking through the scope of his rifle, during an exercise in South West Scotland.
Army Reservists from the 7th Battalion, the Royal Regiment of Scotland (7 SCOTS) have deployed to South West Scotland to learn one of the most difficult roles in infantry combat, that of fighting in an urban area. This is known as Operations in a Built up Area (OBUA). The tough but rewarding course provides attendees with the skills needed to survive in such a complex environment.
The Army Reservists who make up 7 SCOTS are recruited from the northern parts of Scotland. Often they combine their Army career with other, full time employment. With its headquarters in Perth, 7 SCOTS is one of two reserve infantry battalions in Scotland and in recent years members of the Battalion have deployed with their Regular Army colleagues to Operations and Exercises across the world.

British photographer Tim Plowden lives in a wild corner of Singapore that is also called home by a family of smooth-coated otters. The photographer has been keeping track of the adorable animals throughout 2017 as they have successfully raised a clutch six cubs. Their territory stretches along several miles of coastline, a network of mangrove rivers as well as urbanised sections of river and parkland. And Tim isn't the only person to be enchanted by the furry family with many locals having also taken them to heart. Tim comments: ?The playfulness of the cubs is enchanting and I love how strong their family bonds are. They always look out for each other and if they are apart for any length of time they greet each other with such exuberance it makes you appreciate just how close their family ties really are".

A frail old Singaporean man taking his slow-paced daily walk is no threat to a family of 12 otters who have emerged from the mangrove river to scent mark the footpath on their way to hunting fish in the park pond. A cross section of Sinapore's younger generations watch this unique sight from a footbridge in the late afternoon sun. Otters will typically flee when anyone approaches, they are especially wary of curious young children who love to get close to these popular animals! Singapore's Smooth Coated Otter population has grown and expanded into urban areas in the past few years. You can tell when there are otters about by the small crowd of locals gathered at bridges to take videos with their smart phones!
