Following a roll call of names, elderly prisoners (and one pushing a stroller chair for stability) make their way to a room for their lunch, in Onomichi prison., As the Japanese society rapidly ages, the country is now having to deal with a sharp rise in the number of criminals from the pensioner age group. Over 65's now count for the fastest growing age group of inmates.

THE CRISIS OF JAPAN'S AGEING PRISON POPULATION
At a rate much higher than any other developed nation, Japan's over-60s are becoming the fastest-growing criminal age group in the country. The number of over-70s alone charged with criminal offences has trebled within the last 8 years from approximately 10,000 to 30,000. Last year the ratio of elderly offenders to younger offenders was 1:6 compared to 1:24 a decade before.
The most common crimes by the elderly tend to be petty offences like theft and shoplifting, but there were also 150 reported convictions for murder. Such is the dramatic increase in the percentage of elderly prisoners (currently 12% of the total prison population), Japan has been forced to invest billions of yen to construct 3 new prison wards to house over 1,000 inmates.
The causes behind this phenomenon are not simple to explain away. The obvious roots lie in Japan's rapidly ageing population, in which the demographic of the typical 'population triangle', which comprises of a large base of young people and small pinnacle of the elderly, is starting to invert, meaning that the number of Japanese over the age of 60 is increasing at a greater rate than usual in comparison to the increase rate in the number of under 30s.
However, this does not explain away the fact that while the number of Japanese aged 60 and over grew by 17% between 2000 and 2006, the number of prisone...

Former Radio 1 presenter Zoe Ball has told how she was so 'high' when she was due to be broadcasting live for the station that she could 'hardly speak.' Indeed, Miss Ball - once known as the original Ladette - has admitted Corporation bosses became increasingly concerned for her 'mental health' as her decadent lifestyle took it's toll.
In a remarkably candid interview, Miss Ball, who hosted the station's blue riband show from 1998 to 2000, recalled how she first met husband Norman Cook - aka pop star Fatboy Slim - during a Radio 1 trip to the hedonistic Balearic island of Ibizia. And she admitted she was so 'high' when she was due to be hosting a live broadcast from the island the following morning, she had trouble communicating. She said: 'I could hardly speak.' She continued: 'As the show finished and my high from the night before started to fade, I looked around at the Radio 1 people and thought: 'I might get the sack.'

RIVER OVERFLOWS AFTER STORM - CARS RESCUED
After the terrific storm the River Brent overflowed, causing a flood on the north Circular Road, where the aquaduct carrying the Regent's Canal passes over the road.
Cars were rendered helpless and were towed and pushed out of the water.

Every morning at 8 o clock Rose state out on her rounds pushing a heavily laden milk barrow. At 2pm she finished and returns to the dairy to give ah and in the bottling departments until 5pm. She volunteered for the job when the milkman was called up and no one else could be found to take the job.
