Researchers have created a woolly mouse — to help bring the long extinct mammoth back to life.
US company Colossal Bioscience is looking to bring back the mammoth using DNA sequences found in well preserved animals frozen after death.
Scientists did computational analysis of woolly mammoth genomes ranging from 3,500 years old to over 1.2 million years old.
Colossal’s mammoth team explored a data set of 121 mammoth and elephant genes to identify the significant ones that impact hair and other cold-adaptation traits.
The scientists refined the list to include ten genes related to hair length, thickness, texture, and colour that were compatible with expression in a mouse.
The team then edited the mouse genome using a streamlined strategy that combined three editing technologies.
The gene editing resulted in the woolly mice.
They all have an edit that causes loss of function in a gene called fibroblast growth factor 5, or FGF5, which alters hair growth cycles.
This leads to hair that can grow as much as three times longer than wild type.
At the same time genes that affect hair follicle development and structure led to the mice growing hair with a woolly texture, wavy coats, and curled whiskers.

Researchers have built virtual reality goggles for mice - to help study human brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s.The mini VR headsets were created using low-cost, off-the-shelf components, such as smartwatch displays and tiny lenses.They rack the rodent’s eye movements and changes in pupil size.For experiments, a mouse stands on a treadmill, with its head fixed in place, as it peers into a pair of eye pieces. It’s neural activity patterns can then be fluorescently imaged.The technology is said to have the potential to help reveal the neural activity that informs spatial navigation and memory function.This would give scientists new insights into disorders such as Alzheimer’s and its potential treatments.The US team at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York State, was led by biomedical engineering, professor Chris Schaffer and assistant neurobiology and behaviour professor Ian Ellwood.

A new computer mouse has been developed that is worn on the hand and operated by finger gestures.
The perfectly named Clip Mouse connects to both PC and Apple Mac devices via Bluetooth 5, functions just like a regular desktop version.
The German designed gadget can perform all the familiar gestures and functions.
But the big difference is that instead of an optical laser sensor it utilises a gyroscope module, usually found in virtual reality controller devices.
A built-in touchpad beneath the fingers monitors the type and direction of gestures as well as the pressure applied by your fingers.
The gyroscope module is specifically designed to recognise movement in the horizontal plane using what the makers call a “carefully crafted” algorithm.
This means that all other hand movements are ignored, ensuring intuitive and accurate operation.
The controller supports all the classic options such as left-click, right-click, scrolling, previous/next page and double-click.

The perfectly named Clip Mouse connects to both PC and Apple Mac devices via Bluetooth 5, functions just like a regular desktop version.

ÔIt became a compulsionÕ: how fertility forums took over my life. After years trying for a child without success, I sought solace in online message boards. Before long, I was spending hours a day poring over intimate posts, sharing everything with total strangers. Would it help?
Infertility is common: one in seven couples in the UK experience it, with 12% of women aged 25-34 and 17.7% of women aged 35-44 saying they have unsuccessfully tried to get pregnant. After two years of trying for a second child, I recently underwent three rounds of IVF. The first ended in a chemical pregnancy (an early miscarriage, occurring within the first few weeks); on the second, we banked the embryos as insurance; and on the third round in October 2020, I became pregnant with twins, but lost one. I now have a three-month-old baby girl.
So, like many women, I sought answers and solace in online message boards, niche Facebook groups and closed communities. I began by poring over photos of other womenÕs pregnancy tests; reading when they last had sex and in what position. I knew their partnersÕ sperm counts; I noted tips such as how to use a mooncup as a fertility aid. As I went through the different stages of my quest to get pregnant, I left behind the TTC (Òtrying to conceiveÓ) forums and moved on to closed Facebook groups, from IVF Support UK to Low Ovarian Reserve Support Group to IVF Babies Due Date Group.

Richard said of the series: "Having been in local and now national lockdown for a few weeks now I decided to produce some seasonal images with the animals that share my life with while staying at home."

Here is a chess set not for the squeamish – with the figures made up of taxidermy mice.The kings, queens, knights, bishops , castles and pawns are all rodents dressed in appropriate costumes.The set includes 16 light colored mice and 16 dark mice, in various sizes, pawns being the smallest.The mice are all individually stuffed by self-taught taxidermist Rachael Garcia from Florida in the USA.She stresses that the dead mice were acquired from a captive breeding facility that distributes frozen rodents for pet reptile feeding.As well as mice, Rachael uses foam, cotton, wire, beads, fabric, wood, paint, paper and glue to make each set which take at least 30 to 60 days to complete and dry.She said:” Every mouse was a unique creature in life, making each piece of this set a one of kind creation hand stuffed by me.”The set comes complete with wooden handmade chess board, and storage boxes.She can customise both the costumes of the pieces and the colours and board design. The sets are available from her store on shopping website Etsy under the trading name TheCurious13.
