Fields of tulips waiting to be picked, Dune and Bulb Region, southern Netherlands - 05 May 2010
TREMENDOUS TULIPS AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE

Stunning tulips stretch as far as the eye can see as they wait to be picked and packed off around the world.

Around ten per cent of this multi-coloured harvest is destined for the UK with the rest being split between Europe, the USA and Japan.

But as they grow to the right size they make an incredible spectacle as they cover an area known as the Dune and Bulb Region, in the southern Netherlands.

Between March and the end of May tourists flock to the fields of the region eager to catch a glimpse of the red, yellow and purple flowers.

Student Fabi Fliervoet took pictures of the stunning scenes in fields close to the world's biggest flower garden of Keukenhof, which is near Lisse.

The 23-year-old said: "I saw vast fields full of flowers.

"The landscape was filled with different, brilliant colours as far as the eye could see and small towns dotted around.

"Many tourists just drive around the flower fields and stop on the side of the road to take pictures of themselves with the fields in the background.

"They occasionally walk into the fields and take shots of them being completely covered with different hues from the flowers."

Fabi, who is studying biology at the University of Leiden, in the Netherlands, said other species of flowers are found in the same area.

He added: "The colours provide an awesome relief from what has been a very cold winter here in the Netherlands and the rest of Europe.

"You can just look at them, breath in the fresh spring air and feel refreshed.

"Not only are the colours amazing, but the strong fragrance from the hyacinths is just as amazing."
